Hamelin Gold (ASX:HMG) has kicked off a significant reverse circulation (RC) drilling program at its Day Dawn gold project, strategically located in Western Australia’s highly prospective Paterson Province. This initial phase, comprising 35 holes and spanning 3,000 metres, is specifically targeting the newly identified Aurora Lode. This sub-vertical lode, which trends in a northeast direction and starts right from the surface, has already revealed multiple high-grade gold intersections. These include impressive results such as four metres at 4.31 grams per tonne (g/t) from surface, seven metres at 17.13 g/t from 16 metres downhole, six metres at 19.58 g/t from 31 metres, and a standout three metres at a remarkable 51.12 g/t from 35 metres.
Advancing Gold Potential in the Paterson Province
Managing Director Peter Bewick highlighted the importance of this program as a crucial first step in deepening the company’s understanding of the Day Dawn project’s gold potential, with the initial focus squarely on the high-grade Aurora Lode.
“Importantly, planning is already underway for a second phase of RC drilling designed to test additional parallel lodes, which could significantly expand the known mineralised footprint at the project,” Mr Bewick stated. “This will be followed by EIS co-funded diamond drilling to evaluate the potential for a Telfer-style gold system at depth.”
Mr Bewick further emphasised the Paterson Province’s status as one of Australia’s premier mineral exploration regions. He indicated that the upcoming programs at Day Dawn will be a major focus for Hamelin throughout the 2026 calendar year (CY26). “We look forward to keeping shareholders informed as results are received and interpreted,” he added.
Day Dawn: A Project with Historical Significance and Future Promise
The Day Dawn project itself covers a substantial 20 square kilometre area, situated just 10 kilometres northwest of the massive 20 million ounce Telfer gold-copper mine, also within the Paterson Province. Exploration activities at Day Dawn date back to the 1980s, with various companies identifying high-grade gold occurrences across several prospects. Despite these encouraging historical findings, defining consistent, continuous zones of mineralisation had proven to be a challenge for previous explorers.
Hamelin has undertaken a comprehensive review and reinterpretation of all historical drilling data for Day Dawn. This diligent work has enabled them to identify coherent, near-surface zones of high-grade gold mineralisation. The company’s current belief is that these high-grade lodes may represent the surface expression of a much larger mineral system that has yet to be fully tested.
The current detailed drilling of the Aurora Lode is designed to achieve several key objectives:
- Confirm Geological Reinterpretation: Validate the company’s new understanding of the historical drilling data.
- Generate Contemporary Analytical Results: Obtain up-to-date assay information.
- Provide Metallurgical Sample Material: Secure sufficient sample quantities for initial metallurgical test work, which is vital for assessing the project’s economic viability.
Future Exploration Phases and Strategic Outlook
Following the completion and interpretation of results from this initial phase of RC drilling, a second phase of RC drilling is already planned. This subsequent program will be strategically designed to:
- Target Extensions: Explore the potential for the Aurora Lode to extend further along strike and down dip.
- Test Parallel Repeats: Investigate a series of potential parallel mineralised zones, which could significantly increase the overall mineralised footprint.
If this CY26 program proves successful, it has the potential to substantially enlarge the known mineral system at Day Dawn. Crucially, it will provide essential information required for the design of a subsequent diamond drilling program, which will be co-funded by the Exploration Incentive Scheme (EIS). This diamond drilling will be instrumental in evaluating the potential for a Telfer-style gold system at greater depths.
Hamelin Gold’s current share price is steady at 11.8 cents, with a market capitalisation of $23.30 million.
