A community is reeling after a young man, hailed as a hero with a “purest soul,” was tragically killed while trying to protect a schoolboy from an armed robbery. Aidan Becker, just 22 years old, lost his life on Friday evening at Mernda station, a bustling hub in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, in an act of selfless bravery.
The incident unfolded shortly before 6pm when, according to police allegations, four teenagers approached a 14-year-old schoolboy, intending to rob him. The confrontation escalated, with the boy allegedly assaulted and pushed to the ground. It was at this critical moment that Aidan Becker intervened.
Becker, an off-duty security guard, reportedly walked with the younger boy away from the station, attempting to de-escalate the dangerous situation. However, the group of alleged offenders pursued them. In a horrific turn of events, Becker was then subjected to a brutal assault and fatally stabbed. Despite the desperate efforts of ambulance paramedics to save him, he tragically died at the scene.
A Life Remembered for Kindness and Courage
Friends have spoken of Becker’s extraordinary character, painting a picture of a man who embodied compassion and optimism. Shanae Faralla, who knew Becker for six years, described him as having “the purest soul.” She shared heartfelt memories of their time together, highlighting his charismatic nature and unwavering positivity.
“He was always so charismatic and optimistic about life, he truly was the happiest person to be around,” Faralla recalled. “He was kind and always checking in with me to see how I am doing. My best memories with him are in the year 2021. We would all sit on the chairs in my garage, have a couple drinks and have a laugh, singing on my karaoke machine.”
Becker’s dedication extended to his professional life. A spokesperson for The Alfred hospital, where he worked as part of the security team, stated that he was a “dedicated, respected and much-loved member.” His colleagues will remember him for his vibrant spirit, positive energy, kindness, and commitment. He was, they noted, “a quiet hero who gave his all for those around him.”
Justice and the Law: The Legal Ramifications
In the wake of this devastating tragedy, three males – aged 16, 17, and 18 – have been charged with murder and armed robbery in relation to Becker’s death. A fourth 17-year-old, also allegedly involved, remains under police guard in hospital.
The legal proceedings are underway, with the 16 and 17-year-old charged offenders expected to appear before a children’s court at a later date. The 18-year-old, identified as Mike Pikos, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Sunday. He has been remanded and is scheduled to return to court in June. Court documents reveal that Pikos is also accused of stealing a mobile phone and powerbank valued at $500 and was allegedly found in possession of a machete. This marks Pikos’ first time in custody, the court was informed.
Friends of Aidan Becker are calling for stringent consequences for the alleged offenders. Shanae Faralla expressed a strong sentiment that “adult crime should result in adult time,” referencing the state government’s new “adult time for violent crime” laws. These laws, which came into effect in late February, empower courts to impose adult sentences on young offenders for serious crimes, including recklessly causing injury and armed robbery, aiming for longer custodial terms.
A Community Mourns and Demands Change
The grief and anger surrounding Becker’s death are palpable among his friends. Amber Poulter, another close friend who met Becker in 2019, shared her profound distress.
“He put everyone first in the blink of an eye,” Poulter stated. “When he saw wrong he never hesitated. My friends and I are genuinely sick to our stomach at the thought of any of this, it doesn’t even feel real yet.”

Poulter reflected on the simple joys she shared with Becker and their friends, recalling leisurely afternoons spent in parks, engrossed in conversation. This tragedy marks the second time in four years that Poulter has lost a friend to knife crime, a statistic that fuels her frustration with the perceived inaction on youth violence.
“We are slowly losing all our people to this disgusting heinous crime because they know they get away with it,” she lamented.
Government Response and Community Safety
In response to the growing concerns about youth offending and violent crime, the state government announced on Sunday the deployment of its new violence reduction unit to Mernda. This unit will collaborate with local police and Department of Education staff to address the underlying causes of youth crime in the area.
Premier Jacinta Allan stated, “We created the violence reduction unit for this reason, to work with the community in the aftermath of violence and prevent further trauma.”
Whittlesea area Commander Kate O’Neil expressed her heartbreak over the “vicious” killing of Aidan Becker, while also acknowledging the bravery of those who step in to help others. “But I’m grateful that there are still members of the community who actually still help those in need,” O’Neill commented.
Protective services officers were scheduled to commence patrols at Mernda station from 6pm on Friday, a mere 10 minutes after the fatal attack. Police confirmed on Saturday that Becker’s death would not alter these planned patrol times. The community now grapples with the loss of a young life and calls for a more robust approach to preventing such devastating acts of violence.
