Teen Sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Dominates IPL, Calls for International Call-Up Grow Louder
The recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) season has thrown up a remarkable talent in 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who not only finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer but has also ignited fervent discussions about his immediate inclusion in the Indian national squad. With an upcoming T20 International series against Ireland on the horizon, the buzz surrounding Sooryavanshi’s potential international debut is reaching a fever pitch.
A Stellar IPL Performance
Representing the Rajasthan Royals, Sooryavanshi delivered a season for the ages. Across 16 matches, he amassed an astonishing 776 runs, averaging a formidable 48.50. His strike rate was nothing short of spectacular, clocking in at an unreal 237. This wasn’t just about accumulating runs; Sooryavanshi showcased his aggressive intent with a century and a string of high-octane scores in the 90s, playing crucial cameos in the Eliminator and Qualifier 2 matches.
While the Rajasthan Royals ultimately fell short of reaching the IPL final, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi emerged as one of the most talked-about figures of the championship night. His outstanding individual performance was recognised with a record haul of accolades, most notably the coveted Orange Cap, signifying his status as the tournament’s premier batsman.
Former Selector Backs Immediate India Call-Up
Following his historic IPL campaign, the prospect of Sooryavanshi featuring in the upcoming Ireland T20I series has gained significant traction. MSK Prasad, a former Indian wicketkeeper and ex-chief selector, firmly believes that Sooryavanshi has already demonstrated sufficient prowess to warrant a chance at the international level.
Prasad articulated his views, stating, “He (Sooryavanshi) is not just a prodigy or a super talent. He is already among the best in the world in T20 cricket. He should be fast-tracked immediately into the Indian side. He should be picked for the Ireland series, which happens after the India A tri-series in Sri Lanka.”
In Prasad’s opinion, there is little justification for delaying the young cricketer’s ascent, especially after he proved his mettle against formidable bowling attacks throughout the entire IPL season. The former selector also highlighted Sooryavanshi’s inclusion in the India A squad for the forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka as a critical stepping stone towards a senior India cap.
He further elaborated, “I think it’s nicely poised for him to be drafted into the senior Indian team. I think he is going to flourish in the India A tri-series in Sri Lanka as well. See, there is no point holding him back. He is going to play for India soon, and he is going to play for a long time.”
Prasad acknowledged the traditional pathway through India A cricket but stressed that exceptional talents sometimes warrant a more expedited route. He firmly places Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in this special category, even though the conventional route is typically the preferred one.
“Playing India A and then playing for India is usually the norm, but playing high-pressure IPL among the best in the world is the best way to get into the Indian side. I think the selectors are also thinking along the same line. It’s just a matter of time before he will play for India and will play for a long time,” Prasad added.
India’s June Fixture and Sooryavanshi’s Prospects
India is scheduled to tour Ireland for a brief two-match T20I series, slated to take place from June 26 to June 28. Given the short duration of the series, it is anticipated that opportunities may arise for some emerging talents, while senior players might be afforded a rest. Consequently, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has emerged as a strong contender for a maiden India cap. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to make an official statement regarding the potential accelerated promotion of the 15-year-old prodigy.
Sooryavanshi’s immediate future in the national setup may well depend on his performance in the upcoming India A series against Sri Lanka. Should he continue to exhibit the same outstanding form that characterised his IPL campaign, his name is likely to remain firmly in contention for the Ireland tour, potentially marking the beginning of a long and illustrious international career.
