Ravichandran Ashwin’s Perspective on Kolkata Knight Riders’ Prospects in IPL 2026
Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his insights on the chances of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the upcoming IPL 2026 season. While the tournament is set to begin on March 28, Ashwin does not believe that KKR will perform well this season. He acknowledges that the team will fight hard to win, but he doesn’t see them securing the championship.
Ashwin attributes KKR’s challenges to recent issues within the team, which have made their situation more difficult. Before the season even starts, KKR has already faced significant hurdles. The team has suffered from injuries and player unavailability, which has disrupted their bowling plans and overall strategy.
Leadership Changes and Past Success
Ashwin highlighted how KKR achieved its previous victories through effective leadership and successful team management. The team won two championships under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy and one title when Shreyas Iyer led the side. However, both Gambhir and Iyer are no longer actively involved in team activities, leading to a noticeable impact on the franchise.
According to Ashwin, KKR missed an opportunity to reach the playoff games in the previous season. He expressed his thoughts on his YouTube channel, stating:
“Korbo is there, Lorbo is there, but I don’t think Jeetbo is there. KKR won the title three times, twice under Gautam Gambhir and once under Shreyas Iyer. Now that I think about it, with Shreyas Iyer, you had a qualifying opportunity that went to another team. Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy history is compelling. KKR’s loss ended up being PBKS’ gain.”
The franchise has also undergone changes in the support staff, with Abhishek Nayar taking over as head coach.
Injuries Hit KKR Hard Before Season
KKR entered the auction with a large budget, adding players such as Cameron Green, Mustafizur Rahman, and Matheesha Pathirana to their roster. However, things did not go as planned. Mustafizur Rahman had to leave the squad due to regulatory requirements, while Harshit Rana was ruled out due to injury. Pathirana is still uncertain for the season.
To fill the gap, KKR acquired Blessing Muzarabani. Ashwin expressed his happiness for Muzarabi, noting that he has worked hard and is excited to see him in action. However, the team needs stronger bowlers to compensate for the current deficiencies.
Bowling Concerns Remain a Big Issue
Ashwin clearly stated that the current KKR bowling unit has become less powerful than initially expected. The team faces major difficulties because key players are missing from their lineup.
“After the auction, I had said that KKR’s bowling attack is solid. But now, Mustafizur Rahman is not there. Pathirana’s injury is there, Harshit Rana has been ruled out. KKR has the blessing of Blessing Muzarabani, I am happy for him because he has worked hard and I am excited to see them, but with all the injuries plaguing them, somebody has to do the heavy lifting. I can’t see anyone who can do that.”
Challenges Ahead for KKR
With various problems threatening their championship bid, KKR must rely on their available players to perform well. The team’s struggles highlight the importance of having a strong and consistent bowling attack, which they currently lack. Ashwin’s comments reflect the concerns of many fans and analysts who are watching closely to see if KKR can overcome these obstacles and make a strong showing in IPL 2026.
