Iranian Attack Injures 10 US Service Members at Saudi Base

Escalating tensions have seen Israel launch strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, prompting a retaliatory attack by Iran on a base in Saudi Arabia that resulted in wounded U.S. troops. In a significant development, Iran has agreed to facilitate humanitarian aid and agricultural shipments through the vital Strait of Hormuz, offering a potential pathway to de-escalation after weeks of heightened hostilities.

This agreement follows a period of intense conflict, including Israel’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and Tehran’s subsequent retaliation. The Iranian attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia wounded at least 10 American service members, with two sustaining serious injuries. Several refueling aircraft were also damaged.

Ali Bahreini, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, confirmed that his nation would “facilitate and expedite” the movement of humanitarian and agricultural goods, responding to a United Nations request. He emphasised on social platform X that “This measure reflects Iran’s continued commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts and ensuring that essential aid reaches those in need without delay.” The UN had previously announced the establishment of a task force to address the conflict’s impact on aid delivery.

The Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global chokepoint, a narrow waterway that plays a pivotal role in international trade. Typically, it handles approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments and nearly a third of its fertilizer trade. While market anxieties have largely focused on potential disruptions to oil and natural gas supplies, the restriction of vital fertilizer components and their trade poses a grave threat to global agriculture and food security.

Israeli Strikes on Iranian Nuclear Facilities

Bahreini’s announcement came mere hours after Iranian state media reported that two nuclear facilities had been targeted. Israel, which had previously threatened to “escalate and expand” its campaign against Tehran, claimed responsibility for the strikes. Iran, in turn, swiftly vowed retaliation.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared via X, “Iran will exact HEAVY price for Israeli crimes.” Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization identified the targeted sites as the Shahid Khondab Heavy Water Complex in Arak and the Ardakan yellowcake production plant in Yazd Province, according to the IRNA news agency. The organisation stated that the strikes caused no casualties and posed no risk of radioactive contamination. The Arak plant had reportedly been non-operational since a prior Israeli attack in June.

Yellowcake is a concentrated form of uranium produced after impurities are removed from raw ore. Heavy water, on the other hand, is a crucial component used as a moderator in nuclear reactors. The Israeli military later confirmed that raw materials for uranium enrichment are processed at the Yazd plant, asserting that the strike represented a significant setback for Iran’s nuclear program.

Seyed Majid Moosavi, commander of the IRGC’s Aerospace Force, issued a warning on X, advising employees of companies linked to the U.S. and Israel to vacate their workplaces. He ominously stated, “This time, the equation will no longer be ‘an eye for an eye,’ just wait.”

Late Friday, Israel’s military reported that Iran had launched missiles into the country. Air raid sirens were activated in and around the city of Beer Sheba and areas near Israel’s primary nuclear research centre, which had been targeted by Iranian strikes the previous weekend, resulting in dozens of injuries.

Renewed Push for Israeli-Saudi Normalisation

During an event in Miami sponsored by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, former President Trump reiterated his strong desire for Saudi Arabia and Israel to normalise relations. He has championed this cause for years as part of his Abraham Accords initiative, suggesting that the opportune moment for such normalisation will arise once hostilities with Iran conclude.

“It’s now time,” Trump stated, adding, “We’ve now taken them out, and they are out bigly. We got to get into the Abraham Accords.” However, significant obstacles remain, notably Saudi Arabia’s insistence on a credible path towards a Palestinian state as a prerequisite for normalising commercial and diplomatic ties with Israel.

U.S. Pursues Diplomatic Avenues Amidst Conflict

News of the attacks on Iran emerged shortly after Trump claimed that negotiations to end the war were progressing “very well” and that he had granted Tehran additional time to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iran, however, maintains that it has not engaged in any direct negotiations.

With global stock markets experiencing significant volatility and the economic repercussions of the conflict extending far beyond the Middle East, President Trump faces mounting pressure to resolve Iran’s control over the vital strait. A Gulf Arab bloc reported on Thursday that Iran has been levying tolls on ships transiting the waterway to ensure safe passage.

U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff revealed that Washington had delivered a 15-point “action list” to Iran via Pakistan, proposing a potential ceasefire. This proposal includes restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has rejected this offer and presented its own five-point proposal, which includes demands for reparations and recognition of its sovereignty over the waterway. Trump has warned that if Iran fails to reopen the strait to all traffic by April 6, he will order the destruction of Iran’s energy plants.

The pervasive uncertainty surrounding the conflict led to another decline in U.S. stocks on Friday. The S&P 500 index fell 1.7 percent, marking its worst weekly performance since the war began and its fifth consecutive week of losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also dropped 1.7 percent, while the Nasdaq composite saw a 2.1 percent decrease. Concurrently, crude oil prices continued their upward trajectory.

With U.S. gasoline prices nearing $4 per gallon, members of Congress have been advocating for a suspension of the federal gasoline tax, which currently stands at 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel fuel. Trump indicated he has “thought about” such a suspension but suggested that individual states should consider suspending their own fuel taxes.

Intensified Attacks Reported Early Saturday

Witnesses in eastern Tehran reported a partial power outage following airstrikes. In Israel, loud explosions were heard across Tel Aviv, and emergency services responded to nearly a dozen impact sites. An Associated Press journalist confirmed hearing loud explosions in Tel Aviv, and Israel’s Fire and Rescue Service reported responding to 11 separate impact sites across the metropolitan area. Emergency services confirmed that a man in his 60s died late Friday after sustaining severe injuries.

Defense Minister Israel Katz had previously vowed that Iran “will pay heavy, increasing prices for this war crime.” Israel’s military stated that its attacks on Friday focused on sites “in the heart of Tehran” responsible for producing ballistic missiles and other weapons. The military also reported striking missile launchers and storage sites in western Iran.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense announced that it had intercepted missiles and drones targeting the capital, Riyadh. In Lebanon, the Health Ministry reported two fatalities. Kuwait indicated that its Shuwaikh Port in Kuwait City and the under-construction Mubarak Al Kabeer Port to the north, a key project within China’s “Belt and Road” initiative, sustained “material damage” during attacks. This marks one of the first instances of a Chinese-affiliated project in the Gulf Arab states being targeted in the ongoing conflict, despite China’s continued purchases of Iranian crude oil.

Diplomatic Efforts Continue Amidst Military Reinforcements

Diplomats from various nations, including Pakistan and Turkey, have been attempting to broker a direct meeting between U.S. and Iranian envoys. In parallel, G7 foreign ministers, meeting in France, formally called for an immediate cessation of attacks on civilian populations and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, U.S. naval assets have moved closer to the region, carrying approximately 2,500 Marines. Additionally, at least 1,000 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division, trained for deployment in hostile territories to secure key positions and airfields, have been ordered to the Middle East.

Despite these deployments, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the U.S. “can achieve all of our objectives without ground troops.” Speaking to reporters following the G7 meeting, Rubio explained that the troop movements are intended to provide “maximum opportunity to adjust to contingencies should they emerge.” Israel has deployed the 162nd Division into southern Lebanon to bolster efforts to protect its northern border towns from Hezbollah attacks and to dislodge the militant group, according to the military.

The UN’s International Organization for Migration reported on Friday that 82,000 civilian buildings in Iran, including hospitals and the residences of 180,000 people, have been damaged. Jan Egeland, secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council, warned in a statement, “If this war continues, we risk a far wider humanitarian disaster. Millions could be forced to flee across borders, placing immense pressure on an already overstretched region.”

Rising Death Toll Primarily in Iran and Lebanon

The conflict has resulted in significant loss of life. Eighteen people have died in Israel, with an additional four Israeli soldiers killed in Lebanon. Authorities report that over 1,100 people have been killed in Lebanon and more than 1,900 in Iran. At least 13 American troops have perished, and four individuals in the occupied West Bank and 20 in Gulf Arab states have also died. In Iraq, where Iranian-supported militia groups have become involved in the conflict, 80 members of the security forces have been killed.
