Radio Landscape Shaken: Jackie O’s Departure Sparks Speculation on KIIS FM Breakfast Show Replacements
The Australian radio scene is abuzz with anticipation and speculation following the abrupt departure of radio stalwart Jackie ‘O’ Henderson from The Kyle and Jackie O Show. Henderson’s decision, announced on Tuesday, has sent shockwaves through the industry, prompting discussions about who will fill the considerable void left by one of the nation’s most recognisable breakfast radio duos.

The immediate frontrunner for the coveted hosting gig is widely considered to be veteran presenter Sophie Monk. With a career spanning extensive television and radio appearances, including frequent guest spots on the very KIIS FM show she might soon co-host, Monk brings a wealth of experience and a distinct personality to the table. Her reputation for a down-to-earth demeanour, playful banter, and a refreshing ability to not take herself too seriously makes her a compelling candidate to step into Jackie O’s shoes. This is particularly relevant should her long-time co-host, Kyle Sandilands, eventually return to the microphone following his current two-week suspension.
Beyond Monk, the rumour mill is churning with other potential successors. Industry insiders suggest a pool of seasoned radio personalities could be considered, including names like Amanda Keller, Chrissie Swan, and Fifi Box. The possibility of reality television stars seeking a career pivot into radio has also been floated as a potential, albeit more unexpected, avenue for KIIS FM to explore.
Adding another layer of complexity to the situation, there are whispers that if Sandilands himself does not return to the program, KIIS FM might opt for an entirely new breakfast duo to reinvent the timeslot. This would represent a significant strategic shift for the station.
The Challenge of Replacing a Radio Powerhouse
Replacing a show with the established legacy and massive audience of The Kyle and Jackie O Show presents a formidable challenge. Craig Bruce, who previously served as program director at 2DayFM during the duo’s successful tenure there, commented on the immense task ahead.
“You can’t replace a show like Kyle and Jackie O,” Bruce stated. “You just do the best you can and hope the audience will find a way and be patient with whatever you put in, in its place. It’s going to be a really high-risk, high-reward act for anyone to go in and be the next show.”
In the interim, KIIS FM has appointed Kent ‘Smallzy’ Small to cover the breakfast timeslot. Smallzy himself expressed his astonishment at the unfolding events.
“We are waking up to a very different KIIS,” he told listeners on Wednesday morning, conveying his shock and disbelief at the news. He took a moment to pay a heartfelt tribute to the departing hosts, reflecting on his personal connection to their careers.
“I grew up listening to KJ and my first job in radio was on the Hot 30 with them back in the day,” Smallzy shared. “I used to drive the Thunders. I lied to get the job, I was on my Ps. They were very lovely and they were always very kind.”

The Contractual Fallout and On-Air Incident
The dramatic exit stems from a significant contractual dispute and a heated on-air exchange. ARN, the parent company of KIIS FM, announced on Tuesday that Jackie Henderson’s reported $100 million contract had been terminated. This decision followed Henderson’s declaration to executives that she “cannot continue to work with Mr Kyle Sandilands” due to his “harsh comments on-air that left her in tears.”
Consequently, Sandilands has been suspended for two weeks and given a 14-day window to “remedy” the alleged breach of his contract. Failure to do so could result in the termination of his own employment. ARN formally notified Sandilands and Quasar Media Services Pty Ltd, the entity under which he presents the show, that his behaviour on February 20 was considered “an act of serious misconduct which is in breach of ARN’s services agreement.”
ARN has reportedly extended an offer to Henderson for an alternative show within the network, indicating a desire to retain her talent.
The high-profile radio personalities had signed a substantial 10-year deal with Australian Radio Network (ARN) in 2023, with eight years remaining on the agreement. This landmark contract was reportedly valued at $200 million, translating to approximately $47,000 per episode.
Henderson, 51, had been absent from The Kyle & Jackie O Show since Friday, February 20. Her absence followed an on-air dispute with Sandilands, 54, who had accused her of being unfocused at work. The tension escalated when Henderson, while discussing Prince Andrew, began reading out the birth chart of the royal, a move that visibly angered Sandilands. He publicly criticised her perceived obsession with astrology, suggesting it was negatively impacting her professional performance.
An visibly emotional Henderson expressed that she was “deeply ‘offended’” by his critical remarks. She subsequently took a leave of absence, initially expected to return on March 2, but this did not materialise.
ARN’s Official Statement
In a formal statement released by ARN, the company outlined the situation:
“Ms Jacqueline Henderson has given notice that she ‘cannot continue to work with Mr Kyle Sandilands. Accordingly, ARN has terminated the services agreement with Henderson Media Pty Ltd, under which Ms Henderson presents the Kyle and Jackie O show. Ms Henderson will cease to present the Kyle and Jackie O show. ARN has also offered to Ms Henderson the possibility of an alternative show on the ARN network. ARN has also provided written notice to Mr Kyle Sandilands and Quasar Media Services Pty Ltd (Quasar Media) stating that it considers that Mr Sandilands’ behaviour during the show on 20 February 2026 is an act of serious misconduct which is in breach of ARN’s services agreement with Quasar Media, under which Mr Sandilands presents the Kyle and Jackie O show. Mr Sandilands has been given 14 days to remedy this breach. If it is not remedied, ARN will terminate the services agreement with Quasar Media, and in that event Mr Sandilands will cease to present the Kyle and Jackie O show. During the 14 day period, Mr Sandilands will not take part in the show. The KIIS breakfast show will be taken off-air effective immediately, with interim arrangements made for the show.”
