Royal Challengers Bangalore Clinch Maiden IPL Title in Thrilling 2025 Final
After a gruelling two-decade wait, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have finally etched their name in IPL history, securing their first-ever championship title in a nail-biting IPL 2025 final. The iconic Bengaluru-based franchise triumphed over the Punjab Kings in a dramatic showdown held at the colossal Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The victory was achieved under the astute leadership of their new captain, Rajat Patidar, marking a significant turning point for the club.
The decision to appoint Patidar as captain was a meticulously considered one, as revealed by team director Mo Bobat. In a recent podcast discussion, Bobat detailed the extensive evaluation process undertaken by the management before settling on their choice. This strategic shift in leadership was part of a broader plan to secure RCB’s long-term future and ensure sustained success beyond reliance on a single iconic player.
Bobat also confirmed that Virat Kohli, a legendary figure in the sport, is set to retire from professional cricket following the IPL 2026 season. This decision aligns with Kohli’s upcoming 37th birthday, signalling the natural progression of his illustrious career.
A Deliberate Leadership Transition
The management’s contemplation of the captaincy began in earnest after the conclusion of the IPL 2024 season. Following Faf du Plessis’s decision to step down from the captaincy, a crucial meeting took place in London involving du Plessis, head coach Andy Flower, and Virat Kohli. The discussions centred on exploring all available leadership options for the franchise.
Mo Bobat elaborated on the strategic thinking behind this decision: “Andy and I met him in London not long after the 2024 season and talked about that. He’s always ready to step forward and lead. He doesn’t need a second invitation. But we spoke about how this decision is not just about us three as people. It’s about RCB more broadly as a franchise. Its leadership maybe even beyond us. The easy thing would have been to say, ‘Virat, do you mind filling in and doing captaincy?’ But then you’re just kicking a decision down the road. At some point we can’t be dependent on Virat all the time.”
This forward-thinking approach underscored the franchise’s commitment to building a sustainable leadership structure. Bobat stressed that reinstating Kohli as captain, given his age, would not align with RCB’s long-term strategic vision. The team’s focus was on nurturing future leaders and developing a robust plan for the years ahead.
Gearing Up for a Title Defence
With the IPL 2025 trophy in hand, the entire RCB squad, including the newly crowned champions Rajat Patidar and the seasoned Virat Kohli, has already commenced preparations for the upcoming IPL 2026 tournament. The defending champions have been proactive in their player retention and auction strategies, aiming to assemble an even more formidable unit for their title defence.
The franchise demonstrated astute decision-making during the IPL 2026 auction held in December, securing key talent to bolster their ranks. Notably, they retained their core group of players, including:
- Rajat Patidar
- Virat Kohli
- Krunal Pandya
- Tim David
- Romario Shepherd
- Jacob Bethell
- Josh Hazlewood
In addition to these established stars, RCB also made strategic acquisitions, bringing in England batter Jordan Cox and two promising young Indian talents, Vicky Ostwal and Vihaan Malhotra. These additions are expected to inject fresh energy and depth into the squad.

But if you need someone, then obviously I can do it’. We spent a lot of time thinking about that captaincy decision. I don’t mind saying in my career there aren’t that many decisions that I’ve thought about as long and as deeply as that one. And the thinking started in the season before.” This collaborative approach highlights the mutual respect and shared vision within the RCB camp, setting the stage for a new era of success.
