Melbourne Demons’ Rising Star: Kysaiah Pickett’s Remarkable Season
Melbourne Demons’ teammate Ed Langdon has praised Kysaiah Pickett for his impressive growth this season, highlighting how the young midfielder has elevated his game to new heights. As the club navigates life under the guidance of new coach Steven King, Pickett has emerged as a key player, showcasing consistent performances that have caught the attention of fans and teammates alike.
Pickett has embraced more time in the midfield, delivering some of the best numbers of his career. On average, he has recorded 22.7 disposals, 4.3 clearances, and 5.3 tackles per match. His contributions have been vital to the team’s success, especially in crucial moments.
In a standout performance last Sunday, Pickett delivered a brilliant second-half display during Melbourne’s comeback win against Carlton at the MCG. His efforts were instrumental in securing the victory, which gave the Demons a strong start to their season with a 2-1 record (win-loss).
Langdon expressed his admiration for Pickett’s development, noting that he is focusing more on refining his midfield skills. “He’s certainly taken his game to another level,” Langdon said. “He’s such a terrific player and he’s focusing more and more on his midfield craft, and working out how the best midfielders in the competition go about it. And we know what he can do when he goes forward — that’s kicking goals.”
The Demons are set to face Gold Coast at the MCG this Sunday afternoon. The match was initially anticipated as a special occasion, as it would mark the first meeting between the two teams since Christian Petracca joined the Suns during last year’s trade period. Petracca had spent 11 years with the Demons, including a successful stint that culminated in the 2021 premiership.
However, Petracca will be absent due to a hamstring injury, which has dampened the excitement around the matchup. Langdon acknowledged the disappointment but also pointed out the potential benefits for the Demons. “It’s a shame. It would’ve been great to play against Christian,” Langdon said. “But he’s had an unbelievable start to the year, so it might benefit us that he’s actually not playing.”
The Demons have made some changes to their lineup, recalling Daniel Turner and veteran forward Jake Melksham. However, Changkuoth Jiath and Paddy Cross remain sidelined due to injuries. On the other side, the Suns are also missing key players, including Christian Petracca and suspended forward Bailey Humphrey.
Despite these challenges, Suns coach Damien Hardwick is optimistic about the upcoming match. He welcomes back Brownlow Medal winner Matt Rowell from injury, who is expected to strengthen the team’s midfield. This move could provide a significant boost to the Suns’ chances of securing a win.
As the Demons prepare for their next challenge, the focus remains on Pickett’s continued growth and the team’s ability to adapt to the current roster changes. With Langdon’s confidence in Pickett and the support of returning players, the Demons are poised to make a strong impact in the coming weeks.
