Enhanced Security and Traffic Flow Promised for Lagos Coastal Road Following Police Deployment
Lagos State residents and commuters can anticipate improved security and smoother traffic conditions on the newly opened coastal road, following a significant deployment of police personnel. The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Olohundare Jimoh, has personally assured the public of these enhancements, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring a safe and orderly environment along this vital artery.
The coastal road, recently opened with the primary objective of alleviating traffic congestion and easing the commute for those travelling to Lekki and other key areas of Lagos, has seen immediate attention from the police command. To guarantee effective traffic management and the protection of lives and property, officers were promptly assigned to patrol the route.
Commissioner Jimoh acknowledged that the initial phase of the road’s opening had presented challenges, primarily due to a perceived lack of adequate security presence. This had unfortunately led to a rise in traffic violations, including instances of one-way driving, which consequently resulted in significant gridlock and a higher incidence of accidents. However, the situation has since been brought under control.
A Robust Security Presence:
The Commissioner detailed the comprehensive measures implemented to address these initial concerns:
- Extensive Patrol Teams: Over 30 dedicated patrol teams have been deployed along the coastal road. Each team comprises six armed police officers, ensuring a visible and formidable presence.
- Tactical Squad Deployment: Approximately 20 tactical squads have been strategically stationed along the route. These units are equipped to respond swiftly to any potential security threats or major incidents.
- 24-Hour Vigilance: Police personnel are now operating on a 24-hour duty roster along the entire route. This continuous presence is designed to sustain a high level of safety and order, providing round-the-clock security for all road users.
Commissioner Jimoh expressed satisfaction with the impact of these deployments, stating, “From the commencement of the opening of this road till now, there has been no threat of crime and no record of serious or fatal accidents; compliance by road users has significantly improved.” This indicates a marked reduction in both criminal activity and traffic-related mishaps since the enhanced security measures were put in place.
A Safe Haven for Activities:
Beyond the immediate concerns of traffic and crime, the police presence extends to ensuring the safety of surrounding areas. The Commissioner highlighted that the entire coastal road vicinity, including adjacent locations such as recreational centres, beaches, and event venues, is now considered safe for all lawful activities. Residents and visitors can engage in these activities without the fear of harassment or criminal attacks, fostering a more welcoming and secure environment.
Encouragement for Road Users:
Commissioner Jimoh actively encouraged residents, commuters, and users of the estates along the coastal road to continue utilizing this new infrastructure. He reiterated the assurance of its security and accessibility, emphasizing that the police would maintain their robust deployment. This commitment will persist not only as construction work on the road progresses but also as normal work activities resume fully across the area. The ongoing presence of law enforcement aims to build long-term confidence and ensure the sustained success of the coastal road as a key component of Lagos’s transportation network.
