Tucson Community Frustrated as True Crime Enthusiasts Overshadow Nancy Guthrie Investigation
The disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie has gripped the nation, drawing intense public attention. However, what was initially a somber search has become a focal point for amateur sleuths and online personalities, many of whom have descended upon Tucson, Arizona, setting up camp near Ms. Guthrie’s residence. This influx of self-proclaimed investigators has sparked growing tensions between local residents and the online community, fuelled by a deluge of speculation and unverified reports.
Democratic Representative Alma Hernandez, who represents the Tucson and Pima County area, has voiced her strong disapproval of the “true crime sleuths” who have, in her words, “taken over.” Hernandez expressed her exasperation with the “grifting, insane speculation, lies and BS by random wannabe journalists and YouTubers” who, she believes, have exacerbated the situation and jeopardised the ongoing official investigation.
In a pointed statement on social media platform X, Representative Hernandez implored these individuals to cease their interference. “Please GO HOME,” she urged. “Let law enforcement do their jobs. Stop following them during swat operations and playing detectives. I am sick of the constant LIES from those who can’t even spell Tucson and clearly have never been to our city.”
Hernandez also addressed criticism directed at Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, who has faced public scrutiny for his department’s handling of the case. She highlighted the geographical inaccuracies often perpetuated by outsiders, stating, “This home is not near downtown or midtown, so posting random videos of people walking in yards ain’t it y’all, no, Mexicans don’t all look the same, yes, our sheriff should probably stay off social media and not speak to the press anymore.” She concluded her plea with a simple but emphatic, “Yes, this is sad, and we all want Nancy home. But seriously, PLEASE STOP.”
Representative Hernandez’s call for restraint comes as the search for Nancy Guthrie continues without any definitive breakthroughs. On Sunday afternoon, investigators reported the discovery of several gloves approximately two miles from Ms. Guthrie’s $1 million home. The FBI indicated that approximately 16 gloves were collected near the property, with most appearing to be discarded items used by search personnel.

However, one particular glove has drawn significant attention. Officials noted that it differs from the others and bears a striking resemblance to those worn by an unidentified, masked individual captured in a recently released video clip. Authorities are currently awaiting DNA analysis results from an unknown male profile obtained from this glove, with results typically expected within 24 hours.
The doorbell camera footage in question depicts a man concealing his face with a ski mask and his hands with black nitrile gloves.

Throughout the video, the individual appears to make efforts to obscure the camera’s view, even resorting to using a small shrub to block the lens at one point.
The investigation has seen multiple individuals taken in for questioning, though all have subsequently been released. On Friday, three individuals were arrested as persons of interest but were also later released.
Adding to the complexity of the case, a series of ransom notes have been disseminated to media outlets, including several sent to TMZ. The most recent communication reportedly demands $6 million in bitcoin from the Guthrie family.
Savannah Guthrie, along with her siblings Annie and Camron, have actively used social media to address the situation. They have posted videos speaking directly to their missing mother and appealing to her alleged abductors. In these messages, they have consistently pleaded for proof of life, which has yet to be provided.
While law enforcement has not yet identified any specific suspects, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has stated that “no one has been eliminated” from the ongoing inquiry.
In a poignant update, Savannah Guthrie recently shared a compilation of cherished photos and videos of her mother with her and her siblings. The “Today Show” host accompanied the heartwarming clip with a message of unwavering hope: “Our lovely mom. We will never give up on her. Thank you for your prayers and hope.”
