“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes,” the family said in a statement shared on Instagram. “Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years.”
“In recent years, Nicky has found his passion in painting and art,” the family added. “Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends, and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create.”
The statement continued, “Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was. Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart.”
In another statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, the family said, “While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.”
A Career That Left a Mark
Brendon rose to fame in the late 1990s as Xander Harris on the hit series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, appearing in all but one of the show’s 144 episodes across its seven-season run. His performance earned him a place in pop culture history and made him a beloved figure among fans.
After Buffy wrapped in 2003, Brendon continued working in television and film. He had a recurring role as FBI technical analyst Kevin Lynch on Criminal Minds from 2007 to 2014. He also appeared in series such as Private Practice, Kitchen Confidential alongside Bradley Cooper, and Faking It.
On the big screen, his credits included Psycho Beach Party, which went on to achieve cult status, as well as a string of independent genre films.
From Baseball to Acting
Born in Los Angeles in 1971, Brendon initially aspired to become a professional baseball player. However, he turned to acting in part to help manage a stutter, something he later spoke about openly and advocated for through work with the Stuttering Foundation.
In recent years, Brendon had been candid about his health challenges. He revealed in 2023 that he had suffered a heart attack and was living with a congenital heart defect, alongside ongoing complications from cauda equina syndrome that required multiple spinal surgeries.

The actor also faced struggles with substance abuse and mental health. Despite these challenges, he remained resilient and dedicated to his passions.
A Creative Spirit
Outside of acting, Brendon developed a passion for art, regularly sharing his paintings with fans and exhibiting his work in recent years. His artistic endeavors were a reflection of his deep emotional connection and creative spirit.
He is survived by his identical twin brother, Kelly Donovan, and his family. As the world mourns the loss of a talented actor and artist, his legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him and those who admired his work.
Final Thoughts
Nicholas Brendon’s life was marked by both triumph and struggle, but his contributions to entertainment and the arts will not be forgotten. His family’s message emphasized the importance of privacy during this difficult time while also highlighting the joy and inspiration he brought to others.
As fans and colleagues remember him, they will carry forward the memory of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart.
