Sharks’ Playmaker Partnership Ignites with Dominant Performance
Cronulla’s five-eighth, Braydon Trindall, and head coach Craig Fitzgibbon have lauded the burgeoning combination between Trindall and fullback Nicho Hynes, describing their on-field synergy as the most potent it has been in the Sharks’ resounding victory over the Gold Coast Titans on Saturday. While stopping short of declaring it Trindall’s finest hour in the club’s colours, both acknowledged the significant strides made by the pairing, which was evident from the outset of the new season.
The Sharks’ dynamic duo appeared remarkably cohesive, a testament to a gruelling pre-season campaign that included dedicated club training and participation in the All Stars game. This shared commitment clearly paid dividends, with both players crossing the try line twice in the comprehensive 50-10 win. Trindall, in particular, showcased his playmaking prowess with an impressive four try assists and a perfectly executed 40/20 kick, demonstrating his impact across multiple facets of the game.

“It probably feels like the best it’s ever been with Nicho,” Trindall commented after the match, reflecting on the seamless understanding between the two. “We put in a lot of hard work behind closed doors, at training, and even off the field when we get together. We make a conscious effort to stay as connected as possible, and that connection really shines through when we’re out there playing.”
Despite wearing the number six jersey, Trindall assumed the mantle of the dominant attacking half. Fitzgibbon noted that this assertive approach isn’t a new development but rather a refinement of their existing strategy, leading to a more fluid and effective attacking structure. “It’s not a departure from what we’ve always done,” Fitzgibbon explained. “The key difference is that they’re continuously improving at it. We focus on scenarios where there are repeat sets and a lot of ball in the midfield. In those situations, Hynes, being a natural runner, is the one who should be on the ball. It’s a straightforward approach.
“Then, when we have the opportunity to build pressure and set up plays, we look to get ‘Tricky’ (Trindall) on the ball. However, if Hynes is in a position where he can create something before Tricky, there’s no rigid right or wrong answer. This is something we’ve been cultivating for several years. Tricky has developed an excellent instinct for when to take the initiative, and he was truly outstanding.”
The effectiveness of their partnership was highlighted by a beautifully orchestrated try late in the first half. Hynes made a decisive run behind the ruck to score, a play initiated by Trindall’s astute vision. Trindall attributes his stellar form in the opening round to a deliberate and more intense approach to his pre-season preparation.
A Renewed Focus on Fitness and Performance
“I came back for pre-season in arguably the best physical condition I’ve ever been in,” Trindall revealed. “I believe that’s the primary reason for my current fitness levels. I dedicated significant effort during the off-season to maximise my physical readiness. In recent years, I’ve tended to leave my preparation until the last minute, resulting in a less-than-ideal start to the season.
“A degree of maturity has prompted this change,” he continued. “I felt a strong desire to be a better contributor to the team and the playing group, which was the driving force behind my commitment.”
The Road Ahead: A Tough Test Against the Premiers
Having amassed an impressive 50 points in their opening fixture, the Sharks now face a considerably more formidable challenge in their upcoming clash against the Penrith Panthers. The Panthers made an emphatic statement in their season opener, managing to keep the reigning premiers scoreless on their home turf. This early display of dominance underscores the calibre of opposition the Sharks will encounter.
The memory of being eliminated by Penrith in the 2024 preliminary final, following a similar fate against the Melbourne Storm the previous year, is a potent motivator for the Sharks squad. Trindall and his teammates are keenly anticipating the opportunity to test themselves against the likes of Nathan Cleary and his formidable Panthers outfit.

“Those past losses are a massive factor in motivating this playing group,” Trindall asserted. “We put in a tremendous amount of hard work during the off-season, but ultimately, it’s just one game. We need to maintain this momentum and continue to build throughout the year. I relish these intense battles and the chance to compete against elite players like Cleary, so it promises to be an exciting encounter. Our focus must be on ensuring our preparation during the week is spot on, and then we can head to Bathurst ready to perform.”
