Tragic Campsite Confrontation Claims Life in NSW Mid North Coast
A quiet camping trip in the New South Wales Mid North Coast region has tragically ended in death and arrest after a violent altercation at a remote campground. Police were alerted to a serious assault at a campsite located off Point Lookout Road in Ebor, approximately a two-hour drive west of Coffs Harbour, in the early hours of Monday morning.
Authorities received reports detailing a heated dispute between two men, which escalated into a severe physical assault. The victim, identified as a 33-year-old man, sustained critical injuries during the confrontation. Paramedics were called to the scene and provided immediate treatment.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, the injured man was transported approximately 25 kilometres east to the rural township of Thora. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries en route or shortly after arrival, with paramedics unable to save his life.
Officers attached to the New England Police District were dispatched to the campground following the initial reports. Upon their arrival, they were unable to locate the second man involved in the dispute.
Following a comprehensive investigation and subsequent manhunt, police apprehended a 26-year-old man on Waterfall Way in Ebor around 11:30 am. The arrested man has since been transported to Armidale Police Station for questioning. As of the latest reports, no charges have been formally laid.
Superintendent Chris McKinnon of the New England Police District provided further details on the incident. He stated that police believe the two men involved in the fatal scuffle were known to each other. The victim is understood to have suffered significant head injuries as a result of the assault.
The Critical Hours After the Incident
Superintendent McKinnon also revealed that a woman, who was present with the two men, played a crucial role in the events that followed the assault. She reportedly drove the injured victim towards Thora in a desperate attempt to seek urgent medical attention. It is understood that police and paramedics were only able to attend the scene approximately three hours after the alleged incident occurred, highlighting the remoteness of the location and the time it took for help to arrive.
“We believe that the victim did live nearby,” Superintendent McKinnon commented, indicating that the campground may have been a familiar or local spot for those involved.
The arrested 26-year-old male was located by officers walking along a road in Ebor. “That male, we believe, is also from the Thora area and was known to the victim,” Superintendent McKinnon added, reinforcing the connection between the parties.
The Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
Further details emerged regarding the circumstances of the arrest. Superintendent McKinnon explained that the alleged offender was driven to Waterfall Road, near the intersection with Point Lookout Road, by another individual before being intercepted by police.
“Police were advised by a member of the public that there was a male walking along a road,” he stated. “We’re unsure at this stage how he got from that location to where he walked, but it’s certainly a distance that could be walked over a number of hours.” This suggests the man may have travelled a considerable distance on foot after the altercation.
The investigation into this fatal campsite confrontation is ongoing. Police are appealing to the public for any information that may assist their inquiries.
