Northern Territory Grapples with Major Flooding and Crocodile Threat
The Northern Territory is facing significant challenges as major flooding inundates the Katherine region, forcing widespread evacuations and raising serious concerns about public safety, particularly regarding the presence of crocodiles. The Katherine River has surged to its highest point in over two decades, reaching a peak of 19.2 metres, a level not seen since the devastating floods of 1998.
Hundreds of residents have been compelled to leave their homes as the deluge continues. The emergency response has involved extensive efforts, with aircraft and helicopters deployed to assist in evacuations from communities including Palumpa, Jilkminggan, and Nauiyu. Some locals have been moved to higher ground as a temporary measure while rescue operations are underway. Shelters have been established at local schools to provide refuge for those displaced by the rising waters.
Urgent Warnings Issued Amidst Floodwaters and Wildlife Danger
Authorities are issuing stern warnings to the public, urging them to stay clear of floodwaters. The danger extends beyond the fast-flowing currents; the region is teeming with crocodiles, presenting a significant and immediate threat to anyone venturing into the water.
Acting commander of the NT incident control, Shaun Gill, stated at a press conference, “We’ve had independent reports of people swimming in rivers and the like. My message is quite clear: please do not do that.” He emphasised the difficulty and inherent risks involved in rescue operations, especially when individuals place themselves in unnecessary peril.
“There are crocs absolutely everywhere. Please don’t go in the water,” Gill pleaded. “Don’t swim in the water for two reasons: it’s because it’s a fast-flowing river, and also this is when crocs are most active.” The combination of powerful currents and active wildlife makes floodwaters an extremely hazardous environment.
Evacuations and Service Disruptions
The scale of the flooding has necessitated the evacuation of several communities, including Katherine Hospital. Patients have been transferred to Darwin for ongoing care. Multiple schools have been forced to close their doors, and numerous roads have become impassable, cutting off access to affected areas.
Emergency warnings remain in effect for the Katherine township, Nitmiluk, and the Daly River region. Wugularr (Beswick) has been downgraded to a “Watch and Act” alert by Emergency NT, indicating a reduced but still present risk.
The disruption extends to essential services, with power and water supplies significantly impacted. Several areas, including Katherine, Wugularr (Beswick), and Tindal, are under boiled water advisories. Residents in these locations are advised that tap water is unsafe for consumption without first boiling it thoroughly.
Disaster relief payments are being made available to assist those affected by the flooding.
Queensland Braces for Further Flood Impacts
Meanwhile, Queensland is also on high alert, with much of the state facing flood watches. A tropical low that previously impacted north Queensland is now tracking south, bringing the potential for further heavy rainfall and flash flooding.
Large swathes of central Queensland, the Darling Downs, and parts of the south-east coast have been warned to prepare for intense rainfall. Six-hourly rainfall totals are expected to range between 60 and 150 millimetres overnight and into the coming day.
In Rubyvale, residents in the vicinity of Policemans Creek received an urgent alert from the Central Highlands Regional Council, advising them to move to higher ground immediately due to an imminent threat to life and property. The council’s emergency alert highlighted the immediate danger posed by the rising waters.
