By order of the Peaky Blinders, Tommy Shelby and his infamous Birmingham gang are set to make their triumphant return. After the gripping conclusion of the television series in 2022, fans have been on tenterhooks, eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the saga of one of Britain’s most notorious fictional families. The wait, it seems, is finally at an end with the announcement of a feature film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.
Since its debut in 2013, Peaky Blinders carved out a significant niche in television history, achieving both critical acclaim and widespread popularity. Across six compelling series, the show chronicled the ambitious, often brutal, rise of the Shelby family as they expanded their criminal empire through a volatile mix of murder, betrayal, and high-stakes shoot-outs. Now, writer and creator Steven Knight is poised to bring Tommy Shelby’s epic journey to a definitive close with this much-anticipated cinematic outing.

Knight himself has promised an “explosive chapter” for the saga, one that will be “no holds barred.” Speaking at the commencement of filming, he shared his excitement with Netflix: “I’m thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II. The country is at war and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders.”

The Film’s Narrative
While the precise plot details have been kept under wraps, some intriguing glimpses have emerged. A recent trailer hints at Tommy’s return to Birmingham to settle some unfinished business. We see him confronting his son, Duke, who has seemingly taken the reins of the Peaky Blinders and is navigating the complex political landscape of World War II, echoing the power dynamics of 1919.

The official synopsis paints a stark picture: “Birmingham, 1940. Amidst the chaos of WWII, Tommy Shelby is driven back from a self-imposed exile to face his most destructive reckoning yet. With the future of the family and the country at stake, Tommy must face his own demons, and choose whether to confront his legacy, or burn it to the ground. By order of the Peaky Blinders…”
Returning Cast Members
A strong contingent of familiar faces is set to grace the screen once more:
Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby: The undeniable heart of the series, Murphy’s portrayal of the enigmatic gangster propelled him to global stardom. His return was a highly anticipated confirmation for fans. Murphy, who also recently won an Academy Award for his role in Oppenheimer, expressed his gratitude: “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This one is for the fans.”

* Stephen Graham as Hayden Stagg: The acclaimed actor reprises his role as the formidable union convenor from the Liverpool docks.
* Sophie Rundle as Ada Thorn: Tommy’s sharp and resilient sister is back to navigate the family’s latest challenges.
* Ned Dennehy as Charlie Strong: The loyal uncle is expected to return.
* Ian Peck as Curly: Another trusted member of the Shelby inner circle.
* Packy Lee as Johnny Dogs: The ever-present associate is also slated to appear.
New Additions to the Shelby Universe
The Immortal Man also introduces a host of new talent to the Peaky Blinders world:
Barry Keoghan as Duke Shelby: Keoghan, a BAFTA Award-winning actor known for his work in The Banshees of Inisherin and Saltburn, takes on the significant role of Tommy’s eldest illegitimate son. In Tommy’s absence, Duke has stepped up to lead the Peaky Blinders, a role previously portrayed by Conrad Khan.

* Rebecca Ferguson as Kaulo: The Dune star joins in a mysterious capacity. While details about her character are scarce, trailers show her engaging with Tommy, delivering a cryptic warning.
* Tim Roth as Beckett: Roth portrays a new antagonist, Beckett, who appears to be a Nazi sympathiser.
* Jay Lycurgo as Elijah: Lycurgo plays Beckett’s loyal second-in-command, and together they seem poised to draw Duke into a dangerous plot that could aid the Nazi war effort.
Fan Favourites Not Returning
While the cast boasts an impressive array of talent, some beloved characters will be notably absent:
- Sam Claflin (Oswald Mosley): Despite expressing a desire to return, the actor confirmed his character, the fascist politician, will not be featured.
- Tom Hardy (Alfie Solomons): The charismatic and unpredictable gangster is not expected to make an appearance.
- Anya Taylor-Joy (Gina Gray): Her character’s arc concluded at the end of Series Six.
- Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Esme Shelby-Lee): Similar to Gina, Esme’s storyline reached a natural conclusion.
- Natasha O’Keeffe (Lizzie Shelby): The formidable Lizzie’s journey also wrapped up in the final season.
- Daryl McCormack (Isaiah Jesus): While his role expanded in the last series, he is not listed in the official cast announcements.
- Paul Anderson (Arthur Shelby): Tommy’s volatile older brother, a crucial figure throughout the series, had a reduced role in Series Six and is not anticipated to return. His wife, Linda Shelby (played by Kate Phillips), will also be absent.
The Future of Peaky Blinders
While Steven Knight has described The Immortal Man as a “fitting conclusion” to Tommy Shelby’s personal narrative, Netflix has referred to it as an “epic continuation,” leaving the door ajar for further cinematic endeavours, television series, and spin-offs within the Peaky Blinders universe. In fact, the BBC confirmed in October 2025 the development of two seasons of a Peaky Blinders sequel, set to take place 17 years after the original series and focusing on a new generation of Shelbys. Knight envisions this new era as being “rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz. It will be a hell of a ride.”

However, it is highly probable that The Immortal Man marks the definitive end of Tommy Shelby’s story on screen. Cillian Murphy himself, in a recent interview, alluded to the film being his final portrayal of the character, stating, “I don’t think I’m going to be able to process it or think about it until the film comes out, because I believe that a film isn’t finished until people look at it.”
