This collaboration has become even more critical as Vietnam transitions towards a green and digital economy.
Since 1973, over 7,500 Vietnamese scholars have benefited from Australia Awards Scholarships, with many now holding influential positions in government, academia, and industry. The Aus4Skills programme specifically targets vocational education and training, assisting Vietnam in aligning its workforce with the demands of a high-income economy. This has involved supporting curriculum reforms in sectors like logistics, agriculture, and renewable energy, and facilitating the establishment of the Logistics Industry Reference Council to forge vital connections between educational institutions and employers.
The Vietnam Australia Centre stands as another flagship initiative, offering specialised training in public policy, climate governance, and digital transformation. By bringing together experts from both nations, the centre fosters leadership development and champions evidence-based policymaking.
In the crucial agro-forestry-fishery sectors, Australia’s support is channelled through targeted exchanges and capacity-building initiatives designed to help Vietnam meet international standards. This includes the vital sharing of knowledge on low-emission farming techniques, sustainable aquaculture practices, and the implementation of digital certification systems.
Australia’s Role in Vietnam’s Net-Zero Ambitions
Australia is immensely proud to support Vietnam’s ambitious journey towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Through the Enhanced Economic Engagement Strategy and a broad spectrum of development cooperation initiatives, efforts are being strategically aligned to combat climate change while simultaneously fostering sustainable economic growth.
The regional vision for deepening Australia’s engagement with Southeast Asia identifies ten priority sectors, with green energy and the digital economy taking centre stage. Australia’s own security and prosperity are intrinsically linked to the stability and growth of Southeast Asia, and a steadfast commitment to increasing two-way trade and investment with Vietnam is a cornerstone of this strategy. This mutual engagement enables both countries to pursue shared climate objectives and unlock the multifaceted benefits of regional stability and sustainable development.
Under the Development Partnership Plan 2025–2030, Australia is actively supporting Vietnam through policy reform, capacity building, and innovation initiatives.
