Wolves Stun Liverpool with Last-Gasp Winner as Slot Laments “Unnecessary” Defeat
Bottom club Wolves delivered the season’s most significant upset, snatching a stoppage-time victory against Liverpool just a day after manager Arne Slot expressed his disappointment with the current state of Premier League entertainment. The dramatic 2-1 win at Molineux has dealt a significant blow to Liverpool’s title aspirations, leaving manager Arne Slot lamenting another missed opportunity.
The decisive moment came in added time when João Gomes’s deflected strike found the back of the net, capping a frenetic conclusion to the match. This late goal overturned Mohamed Salah’s earlier equaliser, which had cancelled out Rodrigo Gomes’s opener in the 78th minute.
Slot’s pre-match comments, where he stated that “most of the games I see are not a joy to watch” due to an over-reliance on set-pieces, now seem eerily prophetic. However, he also acknowledged the league’s inherent competitiveness, noting, “It’s always interesting as it’s so competitive, and that makes this league great.” This sentiment was underscored by the shock result, proving that unpredictability remains a hallmark of the English top flight.
A Setback and Self-Inflicted Wounds
Following the ninth defeat of their season, Slot was candid about his team’s performance. “It’s another setback and we didn’t help ourselves with this result, not at all,” he admitted. “But there are still nine games to play. We are coming closer and closer to the end.”
His expectations for the season remain unchanged, a testament to his consistent belief in his squad’s potential. “My expectations haven’t changed throughout the season because I expected more than we are fighting for now,” he stated. “Dropping points in a game where it’s absolutely not necessary.”
Reflecting on the flow of the game, Slot was quick to point out that while not playing at their peak, Liverpool’s performance should not have resulted in a loss. “If you look at the run of play, I’m not saying we played great, but if we play this game in this fashion 10 times we don’t lose 10 times,” he explained. “It’s far from sure that we win every time, therefore we are not good enough. That has happened to us so many times.”

Pundits and Players Weigh In
The disappointing display drew sharp criticism from former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who was on punditry duty for TNT Sports. With Liverpool now precariously clinging to a top-five position, Gerrard did not hold back. “For 65 minutes, Liverpool were desperate tonight, really poor,” he remarked. “They didn’t play with the right tempo, the right quality. Wolves were very comfortable.”
Captain Virgil van Dijk echoed the sentiment of self-blame, telling TNT Sports, “I think it’s down to ourselves. It was slow, we were predictable, sloppy in possession and wrong decision-making. We didn’t concede chances but if you perform like that then a result like this can be a result of that and that’s a fact. It was disappointing.”
When questioned about the team’s sluggish start, Van Dijk suggested that a single reason is elusive. “It’s not one reason why that’s the case. The game nowadays we over–analyse why things are happening on the pitch.” He continued, “We as a team want to start a game as well as we can and in the last game we did, today we had majority possession but we were still making wrong decisions and we couldn’t find the end product.”
Looking Ahead to the FA Cup Rematch
Liverpool’s immediate focus shifts back to Molineux, as they are scheduled to return on Friday for an FA Cup fifth-round tie against Wolves. Van Dijk acknowledged the challenge of facing the same opponent so soon after a demoralizing defeat.
“Conceding goals is always frustrating,” he admitted. “We’ve come here on the back of a couple clean sheets, defensively we’ve been very solid but it is what it is and we have to move quickly on because we come back here in a couple of days and we want to do well in the FA Cup.” The quick turnaround presents an immediate opportunity for Liverpool to bounce back and demonstrate a significant improvement in their performance.
