A Cyclist’s Narrow Escape from the Snowy River
A dramatic rescue operation has captured the attention of many after a cyclist was winched to safety following a harrowing incident in the Snowy River in East Gippsland. The event unfolded in the Suggan Buggan area, where an experienced cyclist found themselves trapped in rapidly rising waters.
The 31-year-old cyclist was attempting to cross the Snowy River when water levels began to rise unexpectedly. This sudden change left them stranded in the middle of the river, with no immediate way to escape. The situation escalated as the water continued to flow, creating a dangerous environment for the cyclist.

At this critical moment, the cyclist activated their satellite communication device, which allowed them to send out a distress signal. This action played a crucial role in alerting emergency services to their plight. The call for help led to a swift response from the rescue team, who quickly mobilized to the scene.

As the rescue team searched the river, they eventually spotted the cyclist clinging to reeds and their bicycle. The footage captured the tense moments as the team worked to locate and assist the stranded individual. An Air Wing officer could be heard on the recording, stating:
“We’ve located the person in the river. They’re in among the reeds,” an Air Wing officer said in the clip.
“Our plan is to winch them out.”

The rescue operation required precision and care, as the team had to navigate the fast-moving waters while ensuring the safety of both the cyclist and the rescuers. An officer was carefully lowered into the river, where they successfully reached the cyclist and began the process of winching them to safety.

The operation concluded shortly after 12am on Tuesday, with the cyclist being safely brought back to solid ground. The 31-year-old was then taken to the hospital for a thorough assessment. Fortunately, the cyclist managed to escape the incident without any injuries, highlighting the effectiveness of the rescue efforts.
This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of natural environments and the importance of having emergency communication devices available. It also underscores the dedication and skill of the rescue teams who work tirelessly to ensure the safety of those in peril.
