Man Shot by Police on Sunshine Coast After Armed Confrontation
A tense situation unfolded on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast earlier today, culminating in police shooting a man who was allegedly armed with a firearm. The incident began with a single-vehicle traffic incident and escalated into a confrontation on a busy road, leaving witnesses shaken and prompting a significant police response.
Officers were initially dispatched to the Sunshine Motorway on-ramp at Sippy Downs just before midday following reports of a car crash. According to a Queensland Police Service spokesperson, the driver involved in the crash allegedly fled the scene while in possession of a weapon.
The search for the man led police to Nambour Connection Road in Woombye, approximately 10 kilometres north of the initial crash site. It was here, on this well-travelled road, that the alleged gunman exited his vehicle and confronted responding officers.
“Police tracked the car to Nambour Connection Road, when the driver got out of the vehicle and approached officers while armed with a gun, and was subsequently shot by police,” a spokesperson for the Queensland Police Service stated.
Following the shooting, officers on the scene immediately provided first aid to the injured man. He was then transported by paramedics to Sunshine Coast University Hospital. A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed the man sustained a “serious wound” but was in a stable condition upon arrival at the hospital.
Detective Acting Inspector Kerri Della-Bedova later provided further details, identifying the injured individual as a 31-year-old man. She confirmed he was receiving treatment in hospital for an injury to his shoulder.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with detectives working to piece together the events that led to the confrontation. Della-Bedova indicated that a crucial part of the investigation involves understanding how the alleged gunman received a lift from another man after the initial crash. At this stage, it remains unclear whether the 31-year-old was a person of interest to police prior to the shooting.
“We’re still looking into the matter and it’s still being investigated,” Della-Bedova added.
Witness Accounts Paint a Vivid Picture
The dramatic events were witnessed by several individuals who described the scene as “scary.” Claire Smith, who was driving past the area at the time, recounted hearing two gunshots and observing a confrontation between the man and at least four police officers.
“It just looked like he was taunting the police, I couldn’t hear what he was saying,” Ms Smith told reporters. “I was afraid for the [drivers] that had stopped because they were right next to him.” She reiterated hearing two shots ring out as she passed, adding, “It was so out of place to see a man waving a firearm around with the police with their guns drawn.”
Another resident, Hannah Bonnick, was in her backyard with her children when she heard the commotion. She described hearing sirens, followed by a significant amount of yelling, and then a gunshot.
“I just yelled at [my kids] and told them to get back inside,” Ms Bonnick said. “We ran upstairs and locked the doors, and then I told them to go to my room. I was just looking through the windows and there were police cars everywhere, then a helicopter started circling the sky for a good 30 to 45 minutes.”
Ms Bonnick expressed her shock, noting the incident was unsettling for her generally quiet community, especially given the proximity of two schools. “It was pretty scary only because just we didn’t know what was happening,” she commented.
Community and Official Response
A spokesperson for Suncoast Christian College, situated near the incident, confirmed that police had assured the area was safe and that normal pick-up procedures for students were permitted.
Other witnesses reported seeing numerous marked and unmarked police vehicles converging on the scene rapidly.
The Queensland Police Service has confirmed that the Ethical Standards Command will be conducting a thorough investigation into the shooting, with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission. Further details are expected to be released by police at a press conference scheduled for this afternoon.
