Sydney Police Urge Safe Return of 85-Year-Old Kidnapped in Apparent Case of Mistaken Identity
Sydney, Australia – A frantic search is underway for an 85-year-old widower, Chris Baghsarian, who was reportedly abducted from his North Ryde home early yesterday morning in what police are calling a grave case of mistaken identity. Authorities are pleading for his safe return, expressing serious concerns for his well-being due to his age and reliance on daily medication.
The alarming incident unfolded around 5 am when neighbours were jolted awake by a commotion at Mr. Baghsarian’s residence. Felix Cho, a neighbour, described hearing “glass smashing, dogs barking” followed by escalating screams that were eventually muffled. Looking outside, Mr. Cho witnessed an individual entering a car and speeding away from the scene.
Upon arriving at the property, responding officers discovered that Mr. Baghsarian was missing and that there were clear signs of forced entry. Detective Acting Superintendent Andrew Marks confirmed to reporters that the perpetrators had targeted the wrong individual.
“They took Mr Baghsarian whilst he was at home, in his bedroom of his family home, and they took him and bundled him into a car and took him away to a location that we do not know,” Detective Acting Superintendent Marks stated. “Police consider that Mr Baghsarian was not the intended target.”
Mr. Baghsarian, a grandfather, lives alone following the passing of his wife four years ago. His family has vehemently stated that they have no connections to any criminal activities, reinforcing the belief that he was an innocent victim of a case of mistaken identity.
The Abduction and the Search
The vehicle believed to have been used in the kidnapping, a dark Toyota SUV, was later discovered burnt out in South Turramurra, not far from Mr. Baghsarian’s home. Investigations suggest that at least three individuals were involved in the abduction.
The family of Mr. Baghsarian is understandably devastated and deeply concerned by the ordeal. “His family are quite concerned,” Detective Acting Superintendent Marks commented. “They’re quite surprised that this has happened, and what they want is a safe return of their father.”
Urgent Health Concerns
Adding to the urgency of the situation are Mr. Baghsarian’s significant health needs. He requires daily medication, and authorities are gravely worried about his ability to access it while in captivity.
“Being a hostage, we really fear for his safety and we’re appealing for a very safe return and to get medical attention,” Detective Acting Superintendent Marks implored. “Being an 85-year-old man, we suspect that he may not be doing well.”
A Plea to the Kidnappers
Detective Acting Superintendent Marks issued a direct plea to those responsible for Mr. Baghsarian’s abduction, urging them to ensure his safe release.
“Take him to a hospital. Take him to somewhere that’s safe, and we’ll do the rest. We’ll get him the medical treatment that is required,” he said. “I ask, potentially, if there’s a member of the kidnapper crew that has any common decency to tell us where he is.”
An image of Mr. Baghsarian has been released to the public, and anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or has any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, is strongly encouraged to come forward and contact the police immediately.
