Comedian Tim Key Shares Candid Cancer Journey on The Tommy Tiernan Show
Popular British comedian Tim Key recently offered a deeply personal and candid account of his battle with cancer, speaking openly about his diagnosis and recent treatment on The Tommy Tiernan Show. Appearing as the third guest on the Saturday night program, following musician Dermot Kennedy and actress Lisa O’Rourke, Key initially seemed a little taken aback by the directness of Tiernan’s opening inquiries into his health struggles.
For the first time publicly, the 49-year-old comedian shared the significant challenges he faced after being diagnosed with malignant melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. He admitted that at one point, he was “pretty ill.”
An Unusual Diagnosis on Stage
Key recounted a rather unconventional way in which his initial diagnosis came about. It wasn’t through a routine check-up, but rather from a medical professional in the audience at one of his own comedy gigs.
“I was doing a gig… and I started the show wearing my suit, but in my show I change my clothes and I end up in little denim shorts and a Hawaiian shirt,” Key explained. “I ended up stood on the stairway in the auditorium and next to me was a GP.”
This observant audience member didn’t approach Key directly during the show, but rather took a more formal route.
The following day, the GP sent an email to Key’s agent. The message, as Key humorously recalled, read: “Loved the show, but he should go and see his GP as soon as possible.” This unexpected feedback led Key to seek medical advice.
Swift Action and a Surprising Revelation
Upon visiting his general practitioner, Key was promptly referred to a hospital. There, a consultant reviewed his case and recommended immediate surgery to remove the suspected melanoma.

Tiernan, reacting with a mixture of shock and amusement, declared it “the greatest opener we’ve had” on the RTE show. Key, ever the comedian, lightened the mood further by later discovering the original email from the GP, only to find it hadn’t actually said they “loved the show.”
A Recurring Battle
The initial diagnosis of malignant melanoma occurred around 2018. After undergoing treatment and receiving an “all clear,” Key entered a period of regular medical monitoring.
“I did all of that stuff and got the ‘all clear’ from that situation, then there were four years of MRI scans and CT scans every three months just to check if I was okay,” he detailed.

Following these four years of reassuring scans, Key received another clear bill of health. However, this period of relief was short-lived. Just a year later, in December 2024, he discovered a new lump.
“Then I got the ‘all clear’, hugged it out with my doctor and then a year later, which is last December (2024), I found another lump in my hip,” Key shared.
A New Diagnosis and Ongoing Treatment
Further investigations confirmed a new cancer diagnosis. Key revealed to Tiernan that he had never publicly discussed this second bout of illness until his appearance on the show.
The comedian underwent surgery in February 2025 to have the tumour removed. He then commenced immunotherapy treatment the following month.

Despite the ongoing treatment, Key expressed a sense of gratitude and optimism. “I don’t have cancer now, but I’m doing the treatment for that and I’ve been very fortunate,” he concluded, underscoring his positive outlook amidst his health challenges.
