Brett Pointing Takes the Helm as Queensland’s New Police Commissioner
Queensland’s top policing job has a new face, with Brett Pointing officially stepping into the role of Police Commissioner. This significant appointment follows the retirement of his predecessor, Steve Gollschewski, who served a notable tenure. Pointing brings a wealth of experience back to the Queensland Police Service (QPS), a familiar environment where he began his career in 1981.
His journey within the force saw him rise through the ranks, eventually reaching the position of Deputy Commissioner. In 2020, Pointing transitioned to a new challenge, taking up a Deputy Commissioner role with the Australian Federal Police (AFP). More recently, he was actively involved in an independent advisory panel, contributing to a crucial 100-day review of the Queensland Police.

This upcoming Friday marks Pointing’s official return to the QPS as Commissioner, a position he will hold for the next twelve months. Expressing his deep gratitude for the opportunity, Pointing stated, “Policing has always been in my blood.” He outlined his key priorities, emphasising a commitment to “strengthening community safety, stronger support for the frontline and investing resources where it matters most.” Pointing also conveyed his enthusiasm for his return, noting, “It is great to be back in the Queensland Police, a place where I have strong personal connections.”
Premier David Crisafulli has publicly endorsed the new Commissioner, expressing confidence that Pointing’s leadership will be instrumental in enhancing safety across the state. “Brett Pointing’s experience will be invaluable in leading Queensland Police and restoring safety where you live,” Crisafulli remarked.
A Farewell to Commissioner Gollschewski
The transition in leadership comes shortly after the announcement of former Commissioner Steve Gollschewski’s retirement. Gollschewski’s departure marks the end of a distinguished 46-year career in policing. His decision to step down, less than two years into his commissionership, was influenced by a recent diagnosis of stage four lung cancer.

Gollschewski shared his perspective on his health journey, stating, “Although my determination is stronger than ever, I’ve accepted that having cancer is a lifelong journey, and it is time to put my family and health first.” He reflected on his time leading the QPS as “the greatest honour and privilege of my professional life,” expressing pride in the collective achievements of the service.

Before his retirement, Gollschewski conveyed his full confidence in Brett Pointing, describing him as “one of the most exceptional policing brains in the country.” This endorsement highlights the high regard in which Pointing is held within the national policing community.
Key Priorities for the New Commissioner
Brett Pointing’s immediate focus will likely be on addressing the core objectives he has already articulated. These include:
- Enhancing Community Safety: A primary goal will be to bolster the sense of security within Queensland communities. This could involve a review of current strategies and the implementation of new initiatives designed to deter crime and improve public reassurance.
- Strengthening Frontline Support: Pointing has indicated a commitment to providing more robust support for officers on the ground. This may encompass improved resourcing, better access to training and equipment, and initiatives aimed at addressing the challenges faced by frontline police.
- Strategic Resource Allocation: A key aspect of his leadership will be ensuring that police resources are directed effectively to areas where they will have the greatest impact. This suggests a data-driven approach to policing and a focus on evidence-based practices.
The appointment of Brett Pointing signals a new chapter for the Queensland Police Service, with a leader who possesses both a deep understanding of the organisation and a clear vision for its future. His return to Queensland policing is seen as a positive development, promising a renewed focus on safety and support for those who serve and protect the state.
