Trump Threatens US Blockade of Hormuz After Iran Talks Fail

US Navy to Blockade Strait of Hormuz

Washington has announced that the US Navy will implement a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz following unsuccessful peace negotiations with Iran. President Donald Trump made the statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, emphasizing that any Iranian attempts to interfere would be met with severe consequences.

Peace Talks and Unresolved Issues

The peace talks held in Islamabad over the weekend were described as “well” by Trump, but they failed to resolve key issues regarding Iran’s nuclear program. The president stated that the US Navy, known as “the Finest in the World,” would begin the process of blocking all ships attempting to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz.

Blockade Details and Implications

Trump emphasized that the blockade would eventually allow for free passage, but he accused Iran of withholding information about potential mines in the area. He labeled this as “world extortion” and stressed that the United States would not be intimidated.

The US president instructed the Navy to interdict vessels that have paid tolls to Iran and to destroy any mines laid by Iran in the strait. He warned that any Iranian who fires at the US or peaceful vessels would face dire consequences.

Military Readiness and International Response

Although Trump did not explicitly mention resuming strikes against Iran, he indicated that the military was “locked and loaded” and ready to take action. US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the blockade would start at 10am Monday Washington time, targeting vessels from all nations entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas.

However, ships traveling between non-Iranian ports would still be allowed to transit the strait. This approach is more nuanced than the full blockade initially announced by Trump. Retired US Navy Admiral James Stavridis noted that this operation is risky, as Iran could still pose a threat using mines or small boats with explosives.

Global Reactions and Concerns

A naval blockade is typically considered an act of war. Trump mentioned that other countries would participate in the blockade alongside the US. However, the United Kingdom, which had been organizing a global coalition to help reopen the strait, stated it would not send warships for the blockade, though it may assist in mine-sweeping efforts.

Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese mentioned that his country had not been requested to assist with the blockade and did not expect to be asked. In response to the blockade announcement, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that approaching military vessels would be seen as a ceasefire breach and dealt with harshly.

Impact on Shipping and Oil Prices

The blockade announcement halted the limited ship traffic that had resumed in the strait since the ceasefire. Lloyd’s List intelligence reported that over 40 commercial ships had crossed since the ceasefire began, down from roughly 100 to 135 per day before the conflict.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized the negotiations, stating that the regime engaged in good faith talks but faced maximalist demands and shifting goals. He expressed frustration, stating, “Zero lessons earned.”

Negotiations and Future Outlook

Earlier, negotiating teams concluded 21 hours of talks in the Pakistani capital without reaching a deal to end the war between the US, Israel, and Iran. A fragile ceasefire began last week, except in Lebanon, where Israel continues its strikes on Hezbollah targets.

US Vice President JD Vance, leading the US delegation, called the failure to reach an agreement “bad news,” especially for Iran. He emphasized the need for a commitment from Iran not to pursue nuclear weapons.

Trump’s Predictions and Threats

Trump predicted that Iran would return to the negotiation table, stating, “Nobody can be so stupid as to say, ‘We want nuclear weapons,’ and they have no cards.” He repeated his threat to resume strikes on Iran, claiming he could take out Iran in one day and target its energy infrastructure.

Trump claimed he could destroy Iran’s energy plants and electric generating facilities within an hour, expressing reluctance due to the long rebuilding time required. He also mentioned targeting bridges.

Ongoing Operations and Strategic Importance

While the talks in Pakistan were ongoing, CENTCOM reported that two US Navy destroyers were transiting the strait to ensure it was free of mines previously laid by the IRGC. The strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz cannot be overstated, as it is a critical route for global oil shipments.
