Fyre Festival Echoes and a White House Event: Concerns Mount Over Trump’s America 250 Celebration
The shadow of the infamous Fyre Festival, a disastrous luxury music event that left attendees stranded and artists unpaid, appears to be looming over planned celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary. Reports suggest that Billy McFarland, a convicted fraudster involved in the Fyre Festival’s organisation, was reportedly involved in securing celebrity endorsements for Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. Now, some commentators are drawing parallels between the Fyre Festival’s organisational failures and the Trump administration’s approach to a planned UFC event at the White House, branding it a “disaster waiting to happen.”

Jonathan V. Last, a conservative commentator from The Bulwark, expressed significant concerns about the proposed venue for the UFC event. He highlighted the potential dangers of holding such an event on the South Lawn during the summer months, a period often characterised by thunderstorms in Washington D.C.
“Mid-June through mid-July see a lot of thunder and lightning in Washington and GIANT STEEL ARCHES are about the most dangerous thing you could possibly be near if there’s lighting,” Last noted. He ominously labelled the proposed setup a “Dome of Electric Death.”
Last elaborated on the logistical nightmares that would ensue if inclement weather strikes. “This isn’t a venue,” he stated. He explained that any hint of lightning within a 10-mile radius would necessitate the evacuation of the South Lawn area to protect attendees from the perceived electrical hazard. Furthermore, he pointed out that, according to meteorological advice, audiences would need to remain evacuated for at least 30 minutes after the last lightning flash. The situation would be further complicated by the need for attendees to be re-screened through security if they leave the designated area during an evacuation, only to re-enter.
Even in the absence of adverse weather, Last predicted another unpleasant scenario. “The other thing the Dome of Electric Death will do is attract bugs. A lot of them,” he wrote. He described how these insects would swarm the intensely bright lights illuminating the steel arches.

Last advised that attendees might want to “wear a hat” to shield themselves from this potential bug bombardment. Given these perceived risks, Last suggested that Trump would be better off simply holding a political rally, especially if his primary motivation is self-promotion rather than commemorating American history.

Last also used the situation to muse on the state of America as it approaches its 250th anniversary. He presented a dual perspective:
- The Brand: America, as a brand, has reached its 250-year milestone, which he acknowledged as an achievement.
- The Liberal Democracy: He posited that America as a liberal democracy is in a “decadent, late-imperial phase.” He argued that many of the nation’s political and civic institutions have failed under the “authoritarian test.” He further observed that one of the major political parties is actively exploring “post-liberalism,” and due to legislative and judicial “abdication,” the president has effectively become a “defined-term monarch.”
Cultural Cachet Wanes as Artists Withdraw
In addition to the UFC fight, a concert was also planned as part of the 250th-anniversary celebrations. However, the event has been plagued by artist withdrawals. Many booked acts have reportedly pulled out after claiming they were not fully informed about President Trump’s involvement in the event. In response to these cancellations, Trump has threatened to scrap the concert entirely.
Jeff Slate of MS NOW commented on these withdrawals, suggesting they signify a decline in Trump’s cultural influence. “This was major news, and MAGA world took notice,” Slate explained. He contrasted this with an event just a year prior, where country star Carrie Underwood had readily agreed to perform at Trump’s second inauguration, despite backlash from some fans.
Slate pointed out that the artists withdrawing, such as singers Martina McBride and Bret Michaels, often maintain apolitical public images. He concluded that “something, clearly, has shifted. And fast.”
Slate further elaborated on McBride’s decision, noting that she does not have a history of supporting leftist causes. He argued that her withdrawal starkly illustrates “how culturally corrosive Trump has become during his second term.” He attributed this shift to factors such as ongoing conflicts, rising gas and food prices, persistent inflation, and a job approval rating in the 30s.
