Presidential Slip-Up and Scrutiny Over Cognitive Health
During a recent interview with his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, on the weekend program My View With Lara Trump, President Donald Trump made a notable misstatement, referring to the iconic Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool as the “reflecting pond.” The segment was ostensibly focused on beautification projects underway in Washington, D.C., and at the White House, including a substantial $400 million renovation of the East Wing ballroom.
The president, while discussing various initiatives, commented on the upkeep of the National Mall landmark. “We’re doing one that’s really interesting, the reflecting pond,” he remarked, looking out from a White House window. Lara Trump, wife of the president’s son Eric, did not correct her father-in-law on the name of the historic site. Instead, she appeared to concur, adding that residents had indeed raised concerns about the presence of algae and rubbish at the location.
President Trump went on to critique the spending of previous administrations on the landmark, assuring viewers that his cleanup efforts would be completed swiftly. He also reiterated a personal anecdote, claiming that if the water feature were stood on its side, it would be “taller than any building in the world.”
Cognitive Test Results Under the Microscope
This verbal slip-up occurred just days after the White House had publicly announced that the 79-year-old president had achieved a perfect score on his latest cognitive examination. A report released by presidential physician Dr. Sean P. Barbabella declared the president to be in excellent health. The comprehensive three-page medical report, detailing a thorough physical examination conducted at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, affirmed that the president’s mental status, as well as his cardiac, pulmonary, and neurological functions, were all within normal parameters.
The White House and the president himself had enthusiastically highlighted his perfect score of 30 out of 30 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), an achievement for a man nearing 80 years of age.

However, medical experts have offered a more nuanced perspective on the significance of these results. Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a CNN Medical Analyst, pointed out that this was President Trump’s fourth time taking the MoCA. He explained that repeatedly taking the same test, particularly when the questions do not change significantly, can render the results less reliable as individuals may memorise the correct answers.
Dr. Vin Gupta, chief medical analyst for MS NOW, further clarified that the MoCA is primarily a basic screening tool designed to detect early signs of dementia. He stressed that it is not intended as a measure of “extreme intelligence” or advanced executive functioning, as President Trump has suggested. Dr. Gupta also noted that the frequent administration of cognitive tests often suggests that medical professionals are closely monitoring a patient for an existing or developing neurological condition.
Growing Concerns About Mental Fitness
The public scrutiny of President Trump’s cognitive state intensified prior to the release of his physical examination results. A significant coalition, comprising over 30 neurologists, psychiatrists, and mental health professionals, had issued a joint statement expressing alarm regarding the president’s mental fitness.

This group of experts, which included distinguished professionals such as clinical psychiatrist Prudence Gourguechon and Columbia University professor Jennifer Downey, voiced concerns about what they described as an “increasingly dangerous decline” in the president’s behaviour. They cited “objectively observable signs of serious medical concern” that, in their view, were evident in his day-to-day public appearances and pronouncements.
