Sun Devils’ High-Octane Sun Bowl Loss Caps 2025 Season
The Arizona State Sun Devils concluded their 2025 campaign with a thrilling, yet ultimately unsuccessful, 42-39 loss to the Duke Blue Devils in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. The high-scoring affair, held in El Paso, Texas, marked the end of a season that fell short of the coveted Big 12 title. The Sun Devils faced challenges heading into the bowl game, notably a number of key player opt-outs, while Duke showcased an impressive quarterback, Darian Mensah, who consistently demonstrated elite talent throughout the contest. This marked Arizona State’s seventh appearance in the Sun Bowl and their first under head coach Kenny Dillingham.
First Quarter: A Frenetic Start
The game kicked off with strong defensive play from Arizona State. The Sun Devil defense held firm on Duke’s opening drive, forcing a punt after a crucial sack by Justin Wodtly and Elijah O’Neal. Arizona State’s offense capitalized on their initial possession, orchestrating an 83-yard drive. Quarterback Jeff Sims connected with Jalen Moss for a significant 51-yard gain, setting up a 4-yard rushing touchdown to put the Sun Devils on the board.
Duke quickly responded. Quarterback Darian Mensah engineered a 69-yard touchdown pass to Que’Sean Brown, knotting the score at 7-7. The momentum swung back to Duke when Arizona State failed to convert on a fourth-down attempt. Mensah capitalized on the short field, finding Cooper Barkate for a touchdown following another long completion to Brown, giving Duke the lead.
Arizona State’s offense demonstrated resilience, once again answering the call. Freshman running back Jason Brown Jr. provided a spark with a pair of strong runs. The drive culminated in an 83-yard touchdown pass from Sims to Moss, tying the game once more at 14-14. The first quarter concluded with Duke in possession of the ball, as Arizona State was not awarded an offsides call on a critical fourth-down play.
Second Quarter: A Scoring Barrage
The Sun Devil defense continued their solid performance at the beginning of the second quarter, forcing another stop and regaining possession just over a minute into the period. The initial minutes of the second quarter were relatively quiet until Duke managed to score on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Mensah to tight end Jeremiah Hasley, extending their lead.
Arizona State wasted no time in responding. They embarked on a swift 6-play, 75-yard drive that was exclusively executed on the ground. Sims himself capped off the impressive rushing effort with a 39-yard touchdown run, bringing the Sun Devils back into contention.

Duke’s offense remained potent, with running back Anderson Castle scoring a three-yard touchdown to regain the lead at 28-21. The play was marred by controversy, as Duke tight end Landon King was ejected for a flagrant personal foul following the touchdown.
In the closing stages of the first half, kicker Jesus Gomez delivered a monumental 54-yard field goal, contributing to what became the highest-scoring half in the history of the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. A crucial interception by Tony-Louis Nkuba for Arizona State just before halftime, however, allowed Duke to maintain a 28-24 lead heading into the locker room. The Sun Devils also faced disciplinary issues, with cornerback Kyndrich Breedlove being ejected from the game due to a pair of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
Third Quarter: Back and Forth Action
Arizona State began the second half with renewed energy, but a critical fumble by Jalen Moss inside the Duke 10-yard line, which appeared destined for a touchdown, proved to be a significant setback. Both teams then traded punts as the defenses stiffened for a period. Duke eventually broke the stalemate, with Mensah leading another touchdown drive to extend their advantage to 35-24.

The Sun Devils responded swiftly. A spectacular 68-yard reception by Robinson set up a touchdown for Khamari Anderson. Jeff Sims then successfully converted a two-point conversion with a run, narrowing the deficit to 35-32. Arizona State’s defense managed to hold strong on Duke’s final drive of the quarter, ensuring the Sun Devils would enter the final 15 minutes of their season with possession and a manageable three-point deficit.
Fourth Quarter: A Dramatic Conclusion
Arizona State continued their offensive momentum into the final quarter, embarking on a 77-yard touchdown drive. Malik McClain hauled in the touchdown reception, giving the Sun Devils their first lead since the early stages of the game, 39-35.

In a pivotal moment late in the game, the Sun Devil defense made a crucial stop on a fourth-and-goal play. However, a costly fumble by Jason Brown Jr. gifted Duke a second chance. The Blue Devils capitalized on the opportunity, with Mensah throwing another touchdown pass with just 2:10 remaining on the clock, reclaiming the lead at 42-39.

Jeff Sims committed his first significant error of the contest with 1:47 left in the game, throwing an interception that effectively sealed Duke’s victory. The turnover put Duke in a strong position to run out the clock and secure the win.

The loss marks the end of the 2025 season for Arizona State, a year that, despite its exciting moments and offensive firepower, ultimately did not result in the desired championship hardware. The team’s resilience and ability to respond to adversity were evident throughout the game, but crucial turnovers and Duke’s consistent offensive execution proved to be the deciding factors.
