Election as a Bulwark Against Autocracy: A Call for Democratic Engagement
Sylhet, Bangladesh – In a powerful address delivered at the Sylhet Press Club, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, urged citizens to actively participate in the forthcoming national election, framing it as a crucial battleground against lingering autocratic forces. Speaking as the chief guest at a training workshop for journalists focused on election coverage, Hasan emphasized that while remnants of defeated ideologies persist, their influence has significantly waned compared to the forces driving democratic progress.
The workshop, organized by the Bangladesh Press Institute (PIB), aimed to equip journalists with the necessary skills and knowledge to report responsibly and effectively on the upcoming parliamentary election and referendum scheduled for February 12th. Hasan underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to conducting these polls, acknowledging the challenges but highlighting the determination to see them through.
“The defeated forces are still active, but their strength is much weaker than the forces behind the uprising,” Hasan stated, drawing a clear distinction between those who seek to undermine democracy and the collective will of the people. She stressed that safeguarding democracy hinges on robust public participation, urging a spontaneous and enthusiastic turnout on election day.
The event, presided over by PIB Director General Faruk Wasif, also featured insightful addresses from other distinguished guests. Information Secretary Farzana Mahbub, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwar Alam, Sylhet Press Club President Muktabis Un Noor, and Sylhet Metropolitan Journalists Union General Secretary Khaled Ahmed shared their perspectives on the importance of free and fair elections and the media’s role in upholding democratic principles. Information Secretary Farzana Mahbub articulated a vision of synergy between the media and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, describing them as integral components of a unified family. She highlighted the pivotal role journalists will play in ensuring the integrity of the 13th parliamentary election and referendum. Mahbub issued a direct call to action for the attending journalists, imploring them to actively combat the spread of rumors and misinformation. She advocated for responsible and investigative journalism as the primary tools to uphold truth and justice in the public discourse surrounding the elections.
The training workshop saw the participation of approximately 50 journalists hailing from the Sylhet Press Club and various other media organizations.
