Malaysia’s ‘Bomb Cyclone’: Florida’s Worst Blizzards in Decades

Unprecedented Cold Grips Southern US Amidst Powerful Winter Storm

A severe winter storm has unleashed a torrent of snow and frigid temperatures across the southern United States, crippling travel and plunging regions unaccustomed to such extreme weather into a deep freeze. The unseasonably harsh conditions have prompted widespread warnings and significant disruptions, with many areas experiencing record-breaking cold.

Central Florida, typically basking in seasonal temperatures in the 70s Fahrenheit, is currently under an extreme cold weather warning. Overnight lows are expected to plummet into the upper teens and low 20s, a stark contrast to the region’s usual climate.

Travel Chaos and Road Closures

The storm’s impact on transportation has been particularly severe. In North Carolina, a northbound section of Interstate 85 north of Charlotte became a scene of widespread disruption. Approximately 100 vehicles were stranded in the snow. This situation was exacerbated by a late afternoon crash involving a car and a tractor-trailer, which reduced traffic to a single lane near Kannapolis. As heavy snow began to accumulate on the highway, long traffic jams ensued.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported a staggering 750 car crashes on Saturday alone. The rapid accumulation of snow led to tractor-trailers and cars becoming immobilized, leaving drivers stranded. First Sergeant Christopher Knox of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol explained the compounding effect: “Once they’re blocking the interstate, everybody stops. We’re just limited in what we can do because of the interstate not being physically passable.” He clarified that initial incidents might not be multi-vehicle pile-ups but rather traffic stoppages caused by a single vehicle blocking the roadway, necessitating its removal before normal flow can resume.

This latest bout of severe weather follows closely on the heels of a devastating storm that swept across a vast swathe of the United States just a week prior, claiming over 100 lives and leaving numerous communities still grappling with the aftermath of snow and ice.

Widespread Winter Storm Warnings

Heavy snowfall blanketed North Carolina and neighbouring states on Saturday, prompting authorities to issue urgent advisories for residents to remain indoors. Coastal areas were also put on alert, with warnings of threats to oceanfront structures as a phenomenon dubbed a ‘bomb cyclone’ intensified offshore.

Winter storm warnings were in effect for the entirety of North and South Carolina, along with significant portions of Georgia, eastern Tennessee, Kentucky, and southern Virginia. The area bordering the North Carolina and South Carolina coast was particularly hard-hit, experiencing moderate to heavy snowfall at rates of up to an inch per hour until the early hours of Sunday morning. Lighter snowfall continued to affect much of South Carolina, North Carolina, and southern Virginia.

Road closures were a growing concern across the affected states, including a critical section of I-85 northeast of Charlotte. The Virginia Department of Transportation underscored the importance of reducing traffic, stating, “Fewer cars on the road during winter weather will help to keep everyone safe and allow crews to perform their jobs effectively.”

Notable snowfall accumulations included 14.5 inches in Faust, North Carolina, and 12.5 inches in West Critz, Virginia. Harrisburg, Tennessee, recorded over 9 inches of snow. In Cape Carteret, North Carolina, fierce winds drove thick snow horizontally, leading the National Weather Service to issue a stark warning about “Treacherous and Potentially Life-Threatening” travel conditions, especially for those who might become stranded.

Dramatic Incidents and Flight Disruptions

In a dramatic incident captured on video by Gastonia, North Carolina police, a train collided at high speed with a semi-truck that had become stuck on railway tracks, completely crushing the vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The storm significantly impacted air travel, forcing more than 1,000 flight cancellations at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, a key hub for American Airlines. A dedicated “snow team” of 300 personnel worked to clear runways, taxiways, roads, and sidewalks at the airport. Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the world’s busiest, also experienced over 600 flight cancellations.

The National Weather Service described the unfolding situation: “An explosively deepening coastal cyclone will continue to bring moderate to heavy snow, high winds, and possibly blizzard conditions for the Carolinas. An intense surge of arctic air behind the coastal storm will send below freezing temperatures down toward South Florida by Sunday morning.”

On Saturday, Davis, West Virginia, registered the lowest temperature in the contiguous United States, a biting minus 28 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 33 Celsius). Power outages remained a significant issue, with nearly 175,000 customers without electricity on Saturday night, predominantly in the South. Mississippi, Tennessee, and Louisiana were the hardest-hit states.

‘Bomb Cyclone’ and Unprecedented Cold

Approximately 35 million Americans were under extreme weather warnings for snow and ice as Winter Storm Gianna intensified on Saturday. Forecasters predicted its development into an arctic phenomenon known as a bomb cyclone by Sunday morning, bringing unseasonably low temperatures to the Southeast, including typically mild states like Florida.

The Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia were among the worst affected regions, with many areas still recovering from the previous weekend’s severe winter storm. In North Carolina, the National Park Service announced the closure of campgrounds and some beaches at the Outer Banks, a vulnerable chain of barrier islands. Authorities warned of threats to oceanfront properties and closed a section of highway that runs through the dunes.

In Mississippi, Governor Tate Reeves stated that the US Army Corps of Engineers was assisting in the installation of generators at critical facilities, and authorities were opening 79 shelters and warming centers across the state.

The freezing temperatures forced NASA to postpone a crucial fueling test of its 322-foot rocket on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida. This delay is expected to push back a planned manned Moon flyby by at least several days.

Florida Braces for Arctic Blast

Even Florida was not spared the extreme cold. The National Weather Service indicated a 10 to 20 percent chance of snow flurries around Tampa Bay late Saturday night into Sunday morning, accompanied by “cold, blustery conditions.” Residents were advised to secure loose outdoor items due to a wind advisory that would also pose challenges for high-profile vehicles. Authorities cautioned that boating conditions would become perilous for small vessels.

Orlando’s temperatures were forecast to drop to 25 degrees Fahrenheit or below, while Miami could experience mid-30s Fahrenheit on Sunday and Monday – a level of cold not seen since 2010. Wind chills in northern and central Florida were expected to fall into the single digits.

The severe cold led to the temporary closure of major theme parks in Orlando, including Disney World and Universal Studios. Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park was scheduled to remain closed until Monday. The unusual freezing conditions posed a threat to Florida’s wildlife, with meteorologist Brandon Buckingham explaining to AccuWeather that “Green iguanas are sensitive to the cold and can become stunned when temperatures fall into the 40s and 30s. When that happens, they may lose their grip and fall from the trees.”

The storm was projected to continue strengthening as it tracked northward along the coast into Sunday.

Lingering Power Outages and Hypothermia Risks

As of Saturday, over 150,000 residents in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee remained without power following Winter Storm Fern, according to PowerOutage.us. Overnight lows were predicted to dip into the teens and 20s, posing a significant risk to these communities. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee emphasized the need for a clear timeline for power restoration, transparency regarding deployed linemen, and better understanding of work completion in affected neighborhoods.

Prolonged exposure to extreme cold can lead to hypothermia and frostbite within minutes. Mississippi officials described the current winter storm as the state’s most severe since 1994. Approximately 80 warming centers were established, and National Guard troops were deployed to deliver essential supplies via truck and helicopter.

In Georgia, where temperatures fell below freezing, 65-year-old Dolla Johnson sought refuge in a warming center. “If I hadn´t have been here, I would be sleeping outside,” Johnson, who is homeless, stated. “There´s nowhere else to go. The bridges are not safe. Everything’s freezing over.”

Experts issued warnings about the increasing risks of hypothermia and frostbite, particularly in the South, where some individuals may not possess adequate warm clothing, according to Dr. David Nestler, an emergency medicine specialist at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

Winter Storm Gianna arrived on the heels of Winter Storm Fern, which was responsible for over 100 fatalities across the United States, from Texas to New Jersey. Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana bore the brunt of these tragic losses, with roughly half of the reported deaths occurring in these states.

While some deaths were directly attributed to hypothermia, others are suspected to be linked to carbon monoxide poisoning from the improper use of heating devices. Officials have not released specific details concerning all reported fatalities.

In North Carolina, hundreds of National Guard soldiers were mobilized to provide assistance, and state workers were engaged in preparing roads for safer travel. In Wake Forest, a steady stream of residents sought to fill propane tanks at Holding Oil and Gas, with some having visited multiple locations before finding availability. “I’m here in this cold weather, and I don’t like it,” said José Rosa, holding a 20-pound tank.

Residents in Dare County, encompassing much of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, expressed concern that more unoccupied homes in communities like Rodanthe and Buxton could collapse into the Atlantic Ocean due to the storm’s ferocity.
