Karl Stefanovic’s Future in Media: A Potential Shift to Radio Amidst Podcast Regrets
Speculation is rife in the Australian media landscape regarding the future of well-known television personality Karl Stefanovic. Reports suggest the seasoned presenter may be on the verge of departing his prominent role on the Today show, with a significant shift towards a full-time career in radio being mooted.
The Australian newspaper has indicated that Stefanovic is unlikely to renew his lucrative, multi-million-dollar contract with the Today show when it concludes at the end of the year. Instead, he is reportedly exploring a move to the airwaves, having engaged in informal discussions with the Australian Radio Network (ARN) about such a transition. These conversations are said to have occurred as recently as last month, with Stefanovic currently weighing his various professional options.
During these discussions, Stefanovic reportedly conveyed to ARN boss Michael Stephenson that his plans for the following year were uncertain. This uncertainty comes against a backdrop of evolving media strategies and personal reflections for the popular host.
The Podcast Pivot and Its Perceived Missteps
The Australian also reported on Nine’s decision to grant Stefanovic approval for his independently produced podcast, ‘The Karl Stefanovic Show’, suggesting this move might have been a miscalculation. The publication posits that network executives may have underestimated Stefanovic’s dedication and work ethic towards the project, particularly his desire for the podcast to maintain independence from Nine’s broader corporate direction.
When approached for comment by The Australian regarding any potential divergence from the Nine “company line” on his podcast content, Nine offered a concise statement: “This is an independent podcast entirely produced by Karl.” This assertion highlights Stefanovic’s autonomy in his podcasting venture.

A Public Apology and Shifting Stance on COVID-19 Vaccination
More recently, Stefanovic has publicly expressed regret over his role in advocating for COVID-19 vaccinations during the pandemic. In an episode of his podcast, he engaged in a candid conversation with former Liberal senator and vocal vaccine critic, Gerard Rennick. During this interview, Stefanovic admitted to having regrets about his past involvement in urging Australians to get vaccinated.
It will be recalled that in 2021, during the peak of the pandemic, Stefanovic was a prominent figure in Channel Nine’s ‘This is Our Shot’ COVID-19 vaccination campaign. He appeared alongside a constellation of network celebrities, including Scott Cam, Hamish Blake, Shaynna Blaze, Eddie McGuire, Liz Hayes, and Richard Wilkins.
Now, nearly five years later, Stefanovic has articulated a change of heart, attributing it in part to viewer backlash. He stated, “The one thing they say about me is that I supported the Covid jab, and I have regrets from that time.” He elaborated on his feelings of remorse, saying, “I am definitely sorry for the role I played in not questioning the science, in not questioning more the government mandates, and I feel like I isolated people because of that, and I don’t think the media should be involved in that kind of messaging.” He further clarified his current perspective: “What I do believe is that we should have been there to offer some sort of education, but we shouldn’t have taken that step further and been part of a campaign.”

The Radio Realm: A Coveted Opportunity?
The whispers about Stefanovic’s potential move to radio gained further traction last week with reports of his “informal talks” with ARN. The timing of these discussions is particularly noteworthy, coinciding with significant shifts in the Sydney radio landscape. The unexpected departure from KIIS FM’s The Kyle and Jackie O Show, leaving Jackie ‘O’ Henderson’s co-hosting seat vacant beside Kyle Sandilands, has naturally drawn attention to potential successors.
Stefanovic is no stranger to the Kyle and Jackie O Show, having made past appearances and reportedly sharing a friendly rapport and on-air chemistry with Sandilands. While there is no concrete indication that Stefanovic is being considered for Sandilands’ top-rated breakfast slot, the vacancy is undoubtedly a highly attractive prospect for many in the broadcasting industry.
The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that no formal agreement has yet been reached between Stefanovic and ARN, with both networks declining to comment on the matter.
Contractual Details and Financial Comparisons
Further details emerging from The Australian suggest that Stefanovic’s current contract with the Today show was a 12-month extension granted last year. This extension reportedly came with a significant pay cut, estimated at around $1 million from his previous $3 million salary, contingent on his commitment to improving the show’s ratings, which have consistently trailed behind rival Sunrise. The permission to pursue his podcast was reportedly part of this revised agreement.
While Stefanovic’s current earnings are not precisely known, they are understood to be considerably less than the reported earnings of Kyle Sandilands. In 2023, Sandilands and his former co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson inked a decade-long deal with ARN, reportedly valued at $200 million, translating to approximately $47,000 per episode.

Stefanovic’s potential departure from the Today show comes after more than two decades as a prominent fixture in Australia’s breakfast television scene. Despite a revolving door of high-profile co-hosts over the years, including Jessica Rowe, Lisa Wilkinson, Allison Langdon, and most recently, Sarah Abo, the Today show has consistently found itself in the runner-up position to Sunrise during Stefanovic’s tenure. The media industry will be watching closely to see how these developments unfold.
