Melbourne Experiences Two Random Stabbings in Broad Daylight
Melbourne has been shaken by two random stabbings, with an elderly man and a young childcare worker both allegedly attacked in the middle of the day. The incidents have raised concerns about public safety and the potential for violent crime in the city.
The first incident occurred at M-City Shopping Centre on Blackburn Road in Clayton, where a 25-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed by a 16-year-old boy around 7:50 am on Thursday. According to reports, the woman, who is from Mount Waverley, was followed onto an escalator and then stabbed in the back. A passer-by came to her aid, and she was taken to The Alfred Hospital with serious upper body injuries. She is currently in a stable condition.
The teenager fled the scene but was later taken into custody at a nearby medical centre. It is believed that the two individuals did not know each other. The 16-year-old has since been charged with several offenses, including intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury, assault with a weapon, possession of a controlled weapon, theft, and committing an indictable offence while on bail. He has been remanded in custody and will appear in a children’s court at a later date.
Just over 24 hours after the first attack, a 71-year-old man was allegedly stabbed three times in the back during his morning walk near Crighton Reserve in Port Melbourne. The incident took place around 5:20 am on Friday when the man was approached by a stranger and attacked. CCTV footage captured the elderly man holding his hands to his lower back as he slowly made his way to a nearby cafe for help.
Witness Mohammad Hassoun told 9News, “He wasn’t too bad, you know, he could still talk… I was pleased about that. But he was bleeding, he lost a lot of blood.” He added that the attacker did not take anything from the man, suggesting the attack was random. The man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
Police are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the suspect responsible for the “shocking” attack, which occurred during peak dog-walking time. The man is described as Caucasian, aged between 30 and 40 years old, approximately 182cm tall, possibly with brown hair, and dressed in all black.
These two incidents highlight the growing concern over random acts of violence in public spaces. While the police are working to identify and apprehend those responsible, residents are being urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The community is also calling for increased security measures in shopping centres and public areas to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
