A Family in Grief: The Passing of the Delany Couple
The Delany family is experiencing an immense loss as they mourn the passing of two beloved members within a short span of time. The couple, known for their deep love and connection, have left behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew them.
Ronnie Delany, an Irish Olympian who captured gold at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, passed away on March 11 at the age of 91. His funeral took place on March 16, marking the end of a remarkable life filled with achievements and contributions to sports.
Just two days after Ronnie’s funeral, his wife of 64 years, Joan, also passed away while surrounded by her family at Blackrock Clinic. Her death has left a profound impact on the family and those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Joan’s death notice on RIP.ie highlighted her enduring love and the deep bond she shared with Ronnie. It stated:
‘Beloved and deeply cherished wife of the late Ronnie, so recently departed, and now reunited once more in gentle peace. Predeceased also by her sister Ann and brother Brian…
A kind and loving presence in the lives of all who knew her, Joan will be remembered always for her beauty, warmth, grace, and quiet strength.’

Joan’s funeral service is scheduled for March 21 at St Brigid’s Church, Cabinteely. However, due to her declining health, she was unable to attend Ronnie’s funeral. On that day, she was represented by a single red rose, symbolizing her presence and love.
During the service, Ronnie Jr. shared a heartfelt message about his father’s final wish. He explained that his father wanted him to ensure that Joan knew how much he loved her.
‘His one and only request was to tell mum how much he loved her, how she made his life the happiest life possible, that he adored her and loved her every day of his life,’ he said.

Ronnie Jr. added: ‘He loved her from the moment he set eyes on her. He said how beautiful she was. Dad would never introduce her as his wife; he’d introduce her as “Joan, my beautiful wife.”’
Joan and Ronnie are survived by their children—Lisa, Ronnie, Jennie, and Michelle (Mimi)—as well as their grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Their story is one of love, resilience, and unwavering support for one another. The family will carry their memory with them, cherishing the moments they shared and the legacy they leave behind.
