A New Chapter in the World of The Handmaid’s Tale
Scots actress Lucy Halliday has taken on a new challenge, stepping into her role in the spin-off series The Testaments, which is based on Margaret Atwood’s acclaimed book. The show is set to explore the lives of women within the oppressive regime of Gilead, and Halliday feels a deep sense of responsibility for her part in this highly anticipated continuation.
Halliday, who hails from Paisley, Renfrewshire, spoke at the Series Mania festival in Lille, France, where The Testaments made its world premiere. She was joined by her co-star Chase Infiniti, who had recently attended the Oscars following her role in a film that won several awards.
Stepping Into a Dystopian World
In the show, Halliday plays Daisy, a new convert who must navigate the dangers of an elite school for “future wives.” The series delves into the harsh realities of life under the theocratic regime of Gilead, where obedience is enforced with strict rules.
During interviews, Halliday emphasized the importance of maintaining secrecy about her role in The Testaments. However, she finally shared some insights during a panel discussion at the festival. When asked about how she and Infiniti brought their own voices to the show, Halliday highlighted the support from the production team, including Hollywood star Elizabeth Moss.
Supportive Environment and Creative Freedom
Halliday noted that the strong source material provided by Atwood’s books and the previous series gave her a solid foundation. She also praised the collaborative environment created by the production team, including executive producers like Bruce Miller and Warren Littlefield.
“Bruce is so open and willing to have a conversation and would sit down with you and let you brainstorm what you thought the character should be or the thoughts that you had,” she said. This approach helped create a supportive atmosphere where actors felt comfortable exploring their roles.
The Power of Costumes
Costumes played a significant role in helping the actors get into their characters. Infiniti explained that the distinctive robes and gowns worn by the characters were essential in understanding their positions in society. For Agnes, the costume helped her understand how the character would move and carry herself.
Halliday also mentioned that her robe influenced her movement, highlighting the importance of physicality in portraying her character.
A Deep Connection with Characters
Actress Ann Dowd, who plays Aunt Lydia in both The Handmaid’s Tale and The Testaments, revealed her deep connection with her character. She admitted that she doesn’t judge the people she portrays, emphasizing the importance of understanding and empathy in acting.
“I don’t judge her and she’s come to be a very dear friend of mine,” Dowd said. “I’ve come to know her, she’s come to know me and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
Exploring the Dynamics of Power
Director Bruce Miller described The Testaments as a story about young women who are at the top of Gilead’s hierarchy. He noted that the show explores the similarities between the experiences of those at the top and the bottom of the social structure.
Producer Warren Littlefield added that the series aims to bring humanity into its dark plot. He emphasized the strength and resilience of the characters, stating that hope comes from their ability to fight against oppression.
Upcoming Broadcast and Festival Details
The Testaments will be broadcast in the UK starting April 8 on Disney+. Meanwhile, the Series Mania festival continues until March 27, offering fans a chance to experience the latest in international television.
