AFL holds historic tribunal over Saints’ alleged homophobic comment

St Kilda Forward Faces Tribunal Over Alleged Homophobic Slur

St Kilda forward Lance Collard is set to appear before a disciplinary Tribunal on Thursday for an alleged incident involving a Frankston Dolphins player during a Round 2 VFL match. The matter involves a claim that Collard used a homophobic slur, which could result in serious consequences for his career.

Collard has denied the allegations, stating that he used the word “maggot” instead of the offensive term. This denial highlights the importance of the hearing, as it will determine whether the AFL’s “conduct unbecoming” rule was breached. The Tribunal meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 9 at 1:00pm (AEST), marking a significant moment in AFL history as it will be the first time an AFL player faces such a process.

This is not the first time Collard has faced disciplinary action. In 2024, he was banned for six games after using a homophobic slur. Now, with another potential breach, there are growing calls for St Kilda to consider terminating his contract if found guilty.

Current Suspension and Future Availability

In addition to the upcoming Tribunal hearing, Collard is currently serving a two-game suspension for striking Frankston player Jackson Voss during the same game where the alleged slur occurred. The suspension is separate from the charges related to the slur, but both incidents have impacted his availability.

If the Tribunal finds him not guilty of the slur, Collard is expected to return to play in Round 5 against Gold Coast on Sunday, April 26. However, the outcome of the hearing will significantly influence his future with the club and his career in the AFL.

Career Overview and Performance

Since being drafted by St Kilda with pick 28 in the 2023 National Draft, Collard has played 15 matches. Despite his inclusion in the team, he has yet to make an appearance in the senior squad this season. His performance in the VFL has been a key focus for the club, but recent events have shifted attention to the disciplinary issues surrounding his conduct.

The situation raises important questions about the responsibilities of AFL players and the measures taken to ensure a respectful and inclusive environment within the sport. As the Tribunal hearing approaches, fans and officials alike will be watching closely to see how the league responds to this incident.

Potential Implications

The outcome of the hearing could have far-reaching implications for Collard and the broader AFL community. If found guilty, he may face additional suspensions or other penalties, which could affect his standing within the club and the league. On the other hand, if cleared, it may provide an opportunity for him to focus on his performance and contribute to the team moving forward.

This case also underscores the ongoing challenges that sports organizations face in addressing inappropriate behavior and upholding the values of respect and inclusivity. The decisions made in this case could set a precedent for future disciplinary actions and highlight the importance of accountability in professional sports.
