Legal Proceedings Evolve in Alan Jones Indecent Assault Case
Prosecutors have recently withdrawn one of the criminal charges against veteran broadcaster Alan Jones, a development that comes less than two months before his trial is slated to commence. The 85-year-old media personality has maintained his plea of not guilty, vehemently denying all accusations levelled against him. These charges encompass a total of 25 counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual touching, originally pertaining to nine individuals.

Specifically, the charge that will no longer be pursued by the prosecution is a count of assault involving an act of indecency. Court documents indicate that this particular charge related to an alleged incident from 2013. At that time, Mr. Jones was accused of having “touched and grabbed the complainant on his bottom during an event.” As this was the sole charge linked to this specific complainant, its withdrawal directly accounts for the reduction in the total number of complainants in the case.
The upcoming trial is expected to address allegations spanning a period between 2001 and 2019, all of which Mr. Jones denies.
This latest development on Tuesday represents the second notable alteration to the structure and scope of the case. Previously, in September, a significant revision occurred when 11 counts of aggravated indecent assault were substituted with less severe offences. This earlier change also saw the number of complainants reduced by two, a move that consequently kept the proceedings within the jurisdiction of the Local Court, to be heard by a magistrate, rather than being elevated to the District Court for a jury trial. At the time of that reconfiguration, Mr. Jones’s legal representative, Bryan Wrench, characterised the shift as a “downgrade” in the proceedings.
