A Decade of Science-Led Peatland Stewardship: APRIL Group’s Groundbreaking Collaboration

Singapore – For the past ten years, APRIL Group has fostered a unique and impactful partnership between its dedicated Peatland Science team and an independent body, the Peatland Expert Working Group (IPEWG). This collaboration, established in 2015, has served as a cornerstone for responsible peatland management, demonstrating the profound influence of rigorous scientific inquiry on operational decision-making and contributing significantly to the global understanding of these vital ecosystems.

Founded as part of the RGE group of companies, APRIL’s commitment to independent scientific oversight was a forward-thinking initiative. The IPEWG was specifically created to offer impartial advice, ensuring that APRIL’s operations were guided by the latest scientific insights and best practices. This decade-long journey has not only shaped APRIL’s internal strategies but has also yielded valuable knowledge that has benefited the wider scientific community and conservation efforts worldwide.

Dr. Ruth Nussbaum, the esteemed Coordinator of the IPEWG and Director of Proforest, reflected on the pioneering nature of this collaboration. “The inception of the IPEWG was a bold step, a leap of faith for both the company and the scientific community,” she noted. “What truly set this partnership apart was the unprecedented level of access and genuine collaboration granted to independent scientists. This enabled us to provide rigorous, evidence-based advice on operational decisions while simultaneously contributing to critical global research on peatlands.”

The synergy between the IPEWG and APRIL’s in-house Peatland Science team was powered by state-of-the-art infrastructure. A key element of this was the deployment of four Eddy Covariance Flux Towers. These sophisticated installations, strategically placed across different landscape types, were instrumental in measuring greenhouse gas emissions. Operating at heights ranging from 40 to 48 meters above the forest canopy, these towers provided continuous, high-resolution data on carbon flux, offering crucial insights into the environmental impact of peatland management practices.

Complementing the advanced tower technology, extensive long-term monitoring studies were conducted across hundreds of sites. This comprehensive data collection effort generated a robust evidence base that informed a wide array of operational decisions. From the intricate planning of canal infrastructure, designed to manage water levels and prevent peat fires, to the development and refinement of broader sustainability initiatives, the scientific findings were directly integrated into APRIL’s practical management strategies.

The impact of this collaborative research extends far beyond APRIL’s operational boundaries. The joint efforts of the IPEWG and APRIL’s scientists have led to the publication of groundbreaking research in some of the world’s most prestigious scientific journals. Publications in esteemed outlets such as Global Change Biology, Nature Geoscience, and Nature have significantly advanced the global understanding of tropical peatlands, their ecological functions, and their role in the global carbon cycle. Furthermore, the data and findings generated through this partnership have been regularly presented and discussed at international scientific conferences, fostering knowledge exchange and benefiting the broader scientific community.

As the current phase of the IPEWG draws to a close, APRIL is strategically integrating the accumulated expertise into its ongoing governance framework. A significant development in this transition is the appointment of Dr. Fahmuddin Agus to APRIL’s independent Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC). Dr. Agus, a respected member of Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and a long-standing contributor to the IPEWG, joined the SAC in December 2025. His extensive experience in sustainable peatland management and greenhouse gas monitoring is expected to significantly enhance the SAC’s capacity. His presence will bring a vital interdisciplinary perspective to the committee, broadening its scope to encompass the complex social, economic, and ecological dimensions of peatland landscapes, extending beyond APRIL’s direct concessions.

“The inclusion of Dr. Fahmuddin Agus is a testament to our commitment to ensuring the spirit of independent scientific challenge continues to inform APRIL’s governance,” stated Craig Tribolet, Director of Sustainability and External Affairs at APRIL Group. “This move underscores our dedication to continuous improvement and our unwavering commitment to upholding world-class standards in peatland management, as clearly articulated in our Sustainable Forest Management Policy (SFMP) 2.0 and our overarching APRIL2030 commitments.”

Over the past decade, the collaborative efforts between APRIL and the IPEWG have been instrumental in building trust, refining operational practices, and disseminating invaluable knowledge to the global scientific community. While the inherent challenges of managing peatlands, particularly in the face of a changing climate, persist, APRIL’s experience offers a compelling case study. It illustrates how a sustained commitment to science-driven collaboration can yield enduring sustainability outcomes, benefiting both the environment and the communities that depend on these critical landscapes.

The comprehensive journey of this unique partnership, along with its key lessons learned and a vision for the future of integrating rigorous science into corporate sustainability leadership, is meticulously documented in the newly published report, Challenge & Collaboration: A Decade of the Independent Peat Expert Working Group. This report serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and scientific integrity in addressing complex environmental challenges.
