Baby Bunting Shares Surge on Strong Half-Year Results and Record Margins
Shares in Baby Bunting Group Ltd (ASX: BBN) experienced a significant boost of 10% on Tuesday, climbing to $2.42 in early afternoon trade. This positive movement offers welcome relief to investors after the company’s stock saw a roughly 15% dip earlier in the year. The surge appears to be driven by the retailer’s recently released half-year financial results, which have impressed the market.
The key highlights from Baby Bunting’s performance in the first half of the financial year 2026 (FY26) paint a picture of robust growth and improved operational efficiency.
Record Gross Margins and Solid Sales Momentum
Baby Bunting reported a total sales figure of $271.4 million for the first half of FY26, marking a healthy increase of 6.7% compared to the same period last year. This growth was underpinned by a strong performance in comparable store sales, which rose by 4.7%. This figure comfortably exceeded the company’s earlier guidance range of 2% to 3%.
A particularly noteworthy achievement was the company’s gross margin, which reached a historical high of 41%, an increase of 124 basis points. Management attributed this impressive gain to several factors:
- Enhanced Supplier Terms: Favourable negotiations with suppliers have contributed to better cost management.
- Growth in Private Label and Exclusive Products: The increasing popularity and sales of Baby Bunting’s own branded and exclusive product lines have bolstered margins.
- Improved Pricing Discipline: A more strategic approach to pricing has also played a role in this margin expansion.
Consequently, gross profit saw a substantial 10% rise, reaching $111.4 million.
Profitability Lifts, Despite Rising Operational Costs
On a pro forma basis, Baby Bunting’s net profit after tax (NPAT) reached $5 million, an increase of 4.1% from the previous year and in line with the company’s projections. When excluding one-off expenses associated with store refurbishments and network adjustments, the underlying NPAT saw a more dramatic jump of 44%, landing at $7.2 million.
However, the cost of doing business did increase, rising to $96.8 million. This rise is a direct reflection of the company’s strategic investments in:
- New Store Openings: Expanding the physical footprint of the business.
- Store Refurbishments: Upgrading existing stores to modernise the shopping experience.
- Marketing Initiatives: Promoting the brand and its product offerings.
- General Inflationary Pressures: The broader economic environment impacting operational expenses.
In line with its strategy to reinvest in growth, Baby Bunting confirmed that no interim dividend would be paid to shareholders for this period.
Store Upgrades Driving Tangible Results
A cornerstone of Baby Bunting’s forward-thinking strategy is its ‘Store of the Future’ refurbishment program. The company reported that these upgraded stores are delivering significant sales uplifts, averaging around 25%. This performance is at the upper end of the company’s targeted range for these initiatives. During the first half of FY26, a total of six stores were refurbished, with further upgrades planned for the second half of the year.
The company’s online channel also continues to be a strong performer, demonstrating an 18% growth. The digital arm now accounts for a substantial portion of overall sales, nearing one-quarter of the total revenue.
Continued Momentum and Forward Guidance
Encouragingly, the positive trading momentum appears to have carried through into the second half of the financial year. In the first seven weeks of the second half, comparable sales have already increased by 6.7%, with solid growth reported across both Australian and New Zealand operations.
Baby Bunting’s management has reaffirmed its guidance for the second half of the year, projecting a pro forma NPAT between $12.5 million and $14.5 million. For the full financial year, the pro forma NPAT guidance remains within the range of $17.5 million to $19.5 million. The company is also aiming for full-year comparable sales growth of 5% to 7% and expects its gross margin to remain above 41%.
What’s Fuelling the Share Price Rally?
The 10% surge in Baby Bunting’s share price today is a clear indicator of positive market sentiment, driven by the stronger sales momentum and the record-breaking gross margins. While the stock has experienced a challenging start to the year, these recent results suggest a business that is demonstrating resilience and stabilising after a period of heightened retail pressures.
The focus now shifts to the company’s ability to sustain this upward trajectory. If comparable sales continue to perform strongly and gross margins hold above the 41% mark, there is a strong possibility of accelerated earnings growth in the latter half of the financial year. Investors will be watching closely to see if this positive trend can be maintained.
