Tragedy Strikes Regional NSW Campsites: Second Alleged Homicide in Under a Week
Regional New South Wales has been plunged into shock and grief following a second alleged homicide at a campsite within a span of seven days. The latest incident occurred on Sunday near Tamworth, casting a grim shadow over the state’s often tranquil rural landscapes.
Authorities were alerted to an unfolding tragedy on Danglemah Road in Woolbrook, a locality situated in the state’s northeast. Upon arrival, emergency services discovered a man, believed to be in his 50s, who had sustained critical injuries. Paramedics worked tirelessly at the scene, but tragically, the man succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced deceased.

Investigators have been informed that the fatal incident stemmed from an alleged altercation between two men. Reports suggest the disagreement escalated rapidly, leading to the victim being repeatedly stabbed, with injuries sustained to his chest and neck.
Following the incident, a 43-year-old man was taken into custody by police. He has since been formally charged with murder and is scheduled to appear before the Bail Division Court on Monday.
This latest death marks the second alleged murder at a NSW campsite in less than a week, raising serious questions about safety and the circumstances leading to such violent confrontations in outdoor recreation areas.
The previous incident occurred just days prior at the Little Styx River Campground. In that case, 26-year-old Ahwen Kohn was charged with murder following an alleged altercation that took place around 1:40 am on Monday, March 2nd.
Police allege that Mr. Kohn was involved in a violent confrontation with a 33-year-old man, whose identity has not yet been publicly released. The prosecution claims that Mr. Kohn struck the man with an axe. The alleged assault did not stop there; authorities also state that a 25-year-old woman was subsequently assaulted during the same incident.
The man who was allegedly struck with the axe was transported to the nearby rural town of Thora. Despite receiving medical attention from paramedics, he tragically passed away from his injuries.
Mr. Kohn was apprehended by police later that day, on March 2nd, at approximately 11:30 am. His arrest took place on Waterfall Way in Ebor. He initially appeared before the Bail Division Court on Tuesday, March 3rd, and his case is ongoing, with a further appearance scheduled at Armidale Local Court on April 22nd.
The recurrence of such grave incidents in relatively close proximity has sent ripples of concern through communities across regional NSW. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding either incident to come forward and assist with ongoing investigations. The focus remains on piecing together the events that led to these devastating outcomes and ensuring justice for the victims. The remote nature of many campsites, while offering peace and solitude, can also present unique challenges for emergency response and investigation, highlighting the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement.
