Saliba Fitness Boost Ahead of World Cup: Deschamps Allays Injury Fears
William Saliba, the towering centre-back for both Arsenal and the French national team, has been the subject of recent speculation regarding his fitness. Fears had been mounting that the 25-year-old defender might be sidelined for France’s upcoming World Cup campaign due to a suspected back injury. However, French national team manager Didier Deschamps has stepped in to quell these concerns, offering a reassuring update on Saliba’s condition.
The uncertainty surrounding Saliba began to surface following Arsenal’s gruelling Champions League final clash against Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest on Saturday. Saliba played the entirety of the match, which stretched to a marathon 120 minutes before Arsenal were ultimately defeated on penalties.
The demanding fixture was immediately followed by celebrations in north London. Saliba was present with his Arsenal teammates on Sunday afternoon for the Premier League trophy parade, a jubilant affair where they were met by an estimated crowd of around one million ecstatic fans.
However, just hours after the jubilant celebrations, reports began to emerge on Monday suggesting that Saliba was experiencing a back issue that had reportedly worsened after the Champions League final. A French publication, Foot Mercato, indicated that the defender could face several weeks on the sidelines, casting a shadow of doubt over his availability for the World Cup.
Deschamps Confident on Saliba’s Availability

Didier Deschamps, speaking from the French national team’s base at Clairefontaine on Monday, addressed the rumours directly. According to reports from La Depeche, the national team manager stated he was “unaware” of any injury, asserting, “He’s here, everything is fine.”
Despite Deschamps’ confident pronouncements, it is understood that Saliba did undergo fitness assessments on Monday. The medical staff are reportedly still awaiting the full results of these tests, and it remains to be definitively confirmed whether he is operating at 100% capacity. Nevertheless, the manager’s public statement has provided a significant boost in confidence.
Sources from RMC Sport have indicated that it is still “to be seen” whether Saliba will be fit enough to feature in France’s opening World Cup fixture against Senegal on June 16th, marking the commencement of their tournament journey.
Intense Competition in French Defence

Should Saliba prove his fitness, he will be eager to secure his spot in the starting eleven. The French squad boasts a wealth of talent in the central defensive positions, ensuring fierce competition for places. Alongside Saliba, other prominent centre-backs vying for selection include:
- Dayot Upamecano: A key player for Bayern Munich, known for his physicality and aerial prowess.
- Ibrahima Konate: Liverpool’s robust defender, who has impressed with his performances in the Premier League.
- Maxence Lacroix: A talented young defender currently plying his trade in the Bundesliga.
Furthermore, Jules Kounde, who can also operate at centre-back, provides another excellent option for Deschamps. If Saliba and Upamecano are deemed the optimal pairing, they will form a formidable defensive partnership as France navigates their group stage matches.
France has been drawn in Group I of the World Cup, where they will face stern opposition from Senegal, Iraq, and Norway. The strength and cohesion of their defence will undoubtedly be a crucial factor in their pursuit of World Cup glory. The coming days will be critical in determining Saliba’s immediate future and his potential impact on France’s campaign.
