Spencer Pratt’s Unlikely Bid for LA Mayor: From Reality TV Villain to Political Candidate
It seems the path to political office for Spencer Pratt, the man once famously known as the villain from The Hills, was less a calculated career move and more a reaction to devastating personal loss. The reality television personality has thrown his hat into the ring for the Los Angeles mayoral election, a decision spurred by the devastating Pacific Palisades wildfire that, in January 2025, consumed his family home. The outcome of this unusual election will be decided on Tuesday, June 2.
Speaking on the podcast “Club Random with Bill Maher” on Monday, June 1, Pratt, now 42, candidly admitted his mayoral aspirations were never part of a grand plan. “I never planned to be the mayor of L.A.,” he confessed. His motivation, he explained, was to gain a larger platform to highlight what he perceives as widespread negligence. “The reason why I even ran is because this person in charge burned my house down, my mom’s house, my neighbors,” Pratt stated, pointing a finger at the perceived failings of the current administration.
A Personal Crusade: Pratt vs. Mayor Bass
Bill Maher, ever the provocateur, pushed back on Pratt’s intensely personal approach. “You’re making it a little too personal,” Maher countered. “I mean, [Mayor Karen Bass] is not a great mayor… and that is a very common view even among a lot of Democrats. She f—– up some things, a lot of people f—– up some things… one person didn’t burn your house down.”
Pratt, however, remained resolute, agreeing that no single individual directly started the blaze but asserting the principle of accountability. “Agreed, agreed. But let me… one person who’s in charge of all the things that got f—– up that burned my house down, so you have to hold somebody responsible who’s in charge.” Pratt acknowledged that Mayor Bass was out of the country during the fire, stating, “She was in Ghana, so she obviously didn’t light the fire, so… But it is personal because I have to hear my crying mom every day, the lady across from my house burned alive… that lady with parrots, you know, so it is personal.” This deeply personal tragedy has clearly ignited a fierce determination in Pratt to seek change from a position of power.
From Reality Star to Political Aspirant: Pratt’s Journey
Spencer Pratt’s public life began long before the wildfire. His early forays into entertainment include executive producing Princes of Malibu in 2005. He then rose to prominence on The Hills, appearing from 2007 to 2010, and later in its revival, The Hills: New Beginnings, from 2019 to 2021. It was on The Hills that he met and later married co-star Heidi Montag, 39, in 2008. The couple now shares two sons: Gunner, 8, and Ryker, 3.
Pratt revealed a surprising early academic path, telling Maher, “Rewind: When I was 20, I was at USC studying political science.” His pivot to reality television was, by his own account, a serendipitous one. “I see The Osbournes on, they get $25 million, so I call my friend Brody Jenner… and I say ‘can I film a reality show about you guys?’ It happened so I sold this at Fox at 20 years old.” He credits David Foster, Brody Jenner’s stepfather, with advising him to adopt a “villain” persona akin to Simon Cowell. “I leaned into that,” Pratt explained, “and it was very profitable.”
This manufactured persona, however, took on a life of its own. “What happened is that people took it very real, so I kept leaning in because I was chasing ratings bonuses. I was all-in on my character. People took it very serious back then.” This intensity had real-world consequences. “It was pre-Instagram, X hadn’t even dropped, it was Twitter. This was you’re watching the box, and five million people think that’s real, so I was getting all these death threats. My security is like ‘you need to get a gun,’ so I get a gun…”
This experience with firearms, and the subsequent need for a Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit in Los Angeles, became his sole political touchstone for many years. “That’s very hard to get, and the only people who support a CCW was the Republican party. All I cared about politically was to protect my wife and my kids. That’s my only political thing I’m connected to.”
A Shift in Priorities: From Fame to Fire
Pratt never felt compelled to engage in politics until the devastating loss of his home. He explained his previous reluctance to discuss political matters, stating, “I’m also from L.A., and I don’t know a single Republican… Every one of my friends is a Democrat. All the people I talked to all day long are Democrats.” He identified himself as someone who doesn’t align with party politics, prioritizing personal goals. “I was trying to be famous. If you talk about politics, from my perspective, respectfully, the people who talk about politics, it’s a lose-lose. You’re going to p— off half the people. I was just trying to get on shows and be casted. So I never did politics.”
However, the wildfire fundamentally altered his perspective. The personal devastation, the grief of his mother, and the tragic loss of a neighbour have propelled him from the fringes of celebrity into the arena of public service, driven by a desire to hold those in power accountable and prevent future tragedies. His campaign, born from personal tragedy, now aims to address what he sees as systemic failures within the city’s leadership.
