Man Accused of Killing Deputy Apprehended Following Extensive Manhunt
A sophisticated manhunt, utilising advanced technology like drones and wildlife cameras, has culminated in the arrest of a man suspected of fatally shooting a Virginia sheriff’s deputy. The suspect, identified as 55-year-old Michael Puckett, was apprehended on Sunday night, just two days after the tragic incident. His capture occurred as he was reportedly ringing the doorbell of a residence in Surry County, North Carolina, a location mere miles from the Virginia state border.
Puckett was taken into custody and subsequently booked without bond, according to a statement released by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The search effort involved a significant mobilisation of multiple law enforcement agencies from both states.
On Monday, Puckett appeared for an extradition hearing. During this proceeding, he reportedly waived his right to a court-appointed attorney and was awaiting transport back to Virginia to face charges.
The fatal shooting incident unfolded on Friday in Virginia, stemming from a welfare check requested by a family member to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. Upon arrival at the residence, a man inside the home initiated gunfire. The two responding sheriff’s deputies returned fire, but both were struck by bullets. The assailant then fled the scene.

While other individuals were present in the home at the time of the shooting, they fortunately escaped unharmed, as confirmed by Carroll County Sheriff Kevin Kemp.
The deputy who tragically lost his life has been identified as Logan Utt, aged 31. The second deputy, who sustained a gunshot wound to his ballistic vest, is reported to be recovering well at home and is in good condition, Sheriff Kemp stated on Sunday.
The search for Puckett was extensive, with law enforcement actively tracking his movements. Crucially, the suspect was sighted on a wildlife game camera in Surry County, North Carolina, located north of Mount Airy. This intelligence, combined with the deployment of a drone to monitor his progress, proved instrumental in his eventual capture.
Deputy Utt, a military veteran, had joined the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office in 2023. A funeral procession was scheduled for Monday afternoon, travelling from Roanoke, Virginia, to Mount Airy, a community where Utt had previously served as a firefighter.
Sheriff Kemp reflected on Deputy Utt’s character, describing him as having “a servant’s heart.” He elaborated, stating, “He cared for others, he cared for his country, he cared for his family.” This sentiment underscores the profound loss felt by the community and his colleagues.
The successful apprehension highlights the evolving capabilities of law enforcement in tracking and apprehending suspects, with technological advancements playing an increasingly vital role in public safety operations. The coordinated efforts between Virginia and North Carolina authorities demonstrate a strong commitment to justice and the protection of law enforcement officers.
