Dhaka University Student Leader Under Fire for Public Punishment of Outsiders
A recent incident at Dhaka University has ignited a firestorm of controversy after a video surfaced showing a student union official, Sarba Mitra Chakma, a member of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), compelling approximately thirty individuals, predominantly teenagers and young men, to perform physical punishment for playing on the university’s central field. The video, which went viral on social media over the weekend, has drawn widespread condemnation and sparked debate about the limits of authority and appropriate disciplinary measures within educational institutions.
The footage clearly depicts a line of around 30 youths, estimated to be between the ages of 10 and 20, engaged in “ear-holding” squats on the expansive central field. Sarba Mitra Chakma is visibly present, holding a stick and appearing to oversee the disciplinary action. Reports indicate the video was captured in January, around 6 PM, at the heart of the Dhaka University campus.
While university administration has consistently enforced prohibitions against unauthorized individuals playing on the field, it is a common occurrence for teenagers and young men from surrounding neighborhoods to frequent these grounds for recreational activities. This recurring issue has evidently led to escalating tensions.
Official Justification for the Disciplinary Action
In defense of his actions, DUCSU member Sarba Mitra Chakma explained the rationale behind the punishment. He stated that students from outside the university frequently come to play on the field. According to Chakma, when these individuals are asked to leave, they resort to throwing stones and brickbats, posing a challenge that university staff are unable to control. He further highlighted that the personal belongings of university students, including wallets and mobile phones, are frequently targets of theft by these outsiders. Chakma emphasized that repeated warnings have been issued to these individuals regarding these persistent problems.
Chakma also pointed to what he perceived as administrative shortcomings, placing significant blame on the university’s Treasurer. He asserted that multiple proposals for the construction of a boundary wall, intended to restrict access, were repeatedly sent to the Treasurer for approval but were ultimately returned without authorization. “Students complain to us constantly,” Chakma added, underscoring the pressure faced by student representatives to address these ongoing issues.
When directly questioned about whether he specifically ordered the punishment, Chakma confirmed, “Yes, I gave the order.” He further stated that members of the proctorial team and other university staff were present during the incident.
Addressing concerns about his authority to impose such a punishment, Chakma defended his actions by stating, “If no sustainable solution is provided, I have to take action.” He elaborated on the persistent nature of the problem, questioning, “Outsiders are entering repeatedly; what else would you do? They were directed not to play on this field long before DUCSU was formed, yet they do not listen. You have to understand the perspective of the university students.”
University Administration’s Response
In response to the controversy, Dhaka University Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed stated that he was unaware of the specific video. However, he reiterated the importance of adherence to university regulations, noting, “There are rules for everything.” Professor Ahmed emphasized that any individual wishing to play on university grounds must obtain the necessary permission in accordance with established regulations.
Regarding the specific act of forcing individuals to perform ear-holding squats, Professor Ahmed stated, “I cannot comment on this without knowing exactly what transpired with the member.” He assured that he would be speaking with Sarba Mitra Chakma to gather more information and address the matter directly. The Proctor’s statement suggests an internal review of the incident and a commitment to understanding the full context before making a definitive judgment. The university administration’s stance indicates a need for adherence to proper procedures while also acknowledging the complexities of managing campus access and security.
