Dhaka University Students Stage Protest Over Alleged Defamatory Remarks

Dhaka, Bangladesh – Students of Dhaka University (DU) have voiced their strong condemnation and staged a protest against alleged defamatory and false remarks made by a leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami, which they claim targeted the esteemed institution and its female students. The demonstration saw the burning of effigies, symbolizing the outrage felt by the student body.

The protest took place on Sunday evening at the foot of the Raju Memorial Sculpture, a prominent landmark on the DU campus. Around 7:00 PM, students gathered to express their dissent, specifically targeting Md Shamim Ahsan, the Assistant Secretary General of Barguna District Jamaat-e-Islami. Effigies representing Ahsan were set ablaze, underscoring the seriousness of the students’ grievance.

The catalyst for this demonstration appears to be comments allegedly made by Shamim Ahsan during an election rally held on Saturday night. Reports indicate that Ahsan described the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) in highly derogatory terms, labeling it a “drug den and brothel.”

These remarks have been met with widespread disapproval from the university community. Students argue that such statements not only tarnish the reputation of Dhaka University, a historic and respected institution of higher learning, but also deeply demean its female students. The implication that the university environment, particularly in relation to DUCSU, is compromised by illicit activities is seen as a grave insult.

Furthermore, Shamim Ahsan’s alleged statements reportedly linked the current situation at the university to the role of Islami Chhatra Shibir following the DUCSU elections. He was quoted as asserting that Jamaat-e-Islami possesses the capacity to eradicate injustice, extortion, and corruption from the nation. While the leader’s intention may have been to highlight his party’s perceived strengths, the manner in which it was articulated, through disparaging remarks about the university, has drawn significant backlash.

The protesting students have articulated several key concerns stemming from Ahsan’s alleged comments:

  • Damage to University Reputation: The characterization of DUCSU as a “drug den and brothel” is seen as an unwarranted attack on the academic and social environment of Dhaka University, potentially impacting its standing both nationally and internationally.
  • Disrespect to Female Students: The remarks are perceived as particularly offensive to female students, implying an unsafe or compromised environment that is discriminatory and demeaning.
  • Misrepresentation of DUCSU: Students argue that the portrayal of DUCSU is a misrepresentation of its functions and the student leadership involved, overlooking its role in student representation and campus affairs.
  • Political Exploitation: The students believe that such inflammatory language is being used for political gain, exploiting the university’s image for electoral purposes.

The protest serves as a stark reminder of the deep respect and pride students hold for their university and the importance of maintaining a dignified discourse, especially when discussing educational institutions and their inhabitants. The students’ action highlights a commitment to defending the integrity of Dhaka University and ensuring that its female students are treated with the utmost respect. They are calling for accountability and a retraction of the alleged defamatory statements, emphasizing the need for responsible public discourse from political figures. The incident underscores the sensitivity surrounding campus environments and the potential for political rhetoric to cause significant offense and damage to established institutions.
