A tragic incident has unfolded in San Diego, California, where a pregnant 17-year-old, Jariah Edwards, was allegedly shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend just weeks before she was due to give birth. The devastating event has sent shockwaves through the community and left a family grappling with unimaginable loss.
Edwards, originally from Arizona, was visiting San Diego with her family when the alleged attack occurred. According to a friend of the victim, Trevon Williams, 21, her ex-boyfriend, arrived at the rental property around 1 a.m. on Saturday. He reportedly lured Edwards outside by offering her flowers. It was at this moment that police allege Williams shot her in the head.
Following the shooting, Williams is said to have fled on foot into a nearby canyon, where he was apprehended by authorities shortly thereafter. Police had received multiple emergency calls reporting the gunfire. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered the young woman, who was eight months pregnant, unresponsive with a gunshot wound to her head.
A Race Against Time
Edwards was immediately transported to a local hospital. In a desperate attempt to save both mother and child, doctors performed an emergency C-section. Tragically, Jariah Edwards did not survive her injuries. Her family shared with local media that she never had the opportunity to hold or even name her newborn daughter before she passed away.
“Her legacy is that her daughter is going to be everything she wanted to be and so much more, and she should be proud of that,” stated Edwards’ aunt in an interview, highlighting the enduring spirit of her niece.
The baby girl, born prematurely, remains in critical condition.
Community Rallies in Support
A GoFundMe page has been established to help cover the costs of Edwards’ funeral expenses and to support her infant daughter’s ongoing medical treatment. The online fundraiser describes Jariah as “a bright, loving young woman who was just 17 years old and preparing to welcome her first child, a baby girl. She was surrounded by family and friends who cherished her deeply.”
The page further details the heart-wrenching circumstances: “Tragically, while on a family trip, Jariah was tracked down by her ex-boyfriend and lost her life to senseless violence. Her passing has left a hole in the hearts of her mother, sister, family, friends, and most importantly, her newborn baby girl, who is now fighting for her life.”
As of Monday afternoon, the GoFundMe had raised over $4,500 towards its $8,000 goal, demonstrating the community’s outpouring of sympathy and support during this incredibly difficult time.
Investigation Underway
Trevon Williams was arrested at the scene of his apprehension in the canyon without incident. Authorities reported recovering a semi-automatic handgun at the time of his arrest. The motive behind the alleged shooting has not yet been disclosed by law enforcement, and the investigation is ongoing.
Williams has been booked into the San Diego County jail on suspicion of murder. The community is awaiting further details as the investigation progresses, hoping for justice for Jariah Edwards and her precious baby girl.
