London Gatwick Airport is poised for a significant expansion in 2026, with the introduction of seven new airlines set to enhance its global connectivity. This development promises to boost passenger options and contribute to the local economy, solidifying Gatwick’s position as a major international travel hub serving approximately 40 million passengers annually.

Key Airline Additions and Route Expansions

The influx of new carriers will bring a diverse range of destinations within reach for travellers departing from Gatwick. Among the most notable additions is Jet2, the UK’s third-largest airline. Jet2 will deploy six aircraft at Gatwick, operating a comprehensive network of 29 routes across Europe. These new services are scheduled to commence from March 26, 2026, and will connect passengers to popular holiday spots in:

  • Spain
  • The Canary Islands
  • The Balearic Islands
  • Greece
  • Turkey
  • Portugal
  • Malta
  • Italy
  • Croatia
  • Bulgaria
  • Cyprus

The arrival of Jet2 is anticipated to generate significant local employment, with an estimated 300 direct jobs created in roles such as flight deck crew, cabin crew, engineering, and ground operations. Furthermore, hundreds of indirect jobs are expected to emerge within the wider supply chain.

Air France will also establish a presence at Gatwick, launching a new direct service to Paris. Commencing March 29, the French carrier will offer two daily flights to Charles de Gaulle Airport, providing a convenient link between London and the French capital.

German aviation will see increased representation with the debut of Eurowings. From March 29, the airline will operate 13 flights per week to Cologne. Additionally, Eurowings will introduce six weekly services to Stuttgart starting April 13. Another German airline, Condor, has also secured flight slots, offering services from Gatwick to Frankfurt from April.

Further expanding intercontinental reach, Beijing Capital Airlines is reportedly set to launch flights connecting Gatwick to Qingdao, a major city in China’s Shandong province.

Meanwhile, Air Arabia will enhance connectivity to the Middle East with twice-daily flights to Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, beginning March 29. This service will be the sole direct route between this UAE destination and the United Kingdom.

Adding to the European network, Romanian airline AminaWings will commence operations on March 22, offering six flights a week between Bucharest and London Gatwick.

These new airlines join a growing list of carriers that have recently expanded their operations at Gatwick. In the past year, the airport welcomed airlines such as Qanot Sharq, Kenya Airways, Uganda Airlines, Air Peace, and Skybus, underscoring its continuous growth and appeal.

Infrastructure Development: A Second Runway on the Horizon

In parallel with the airline expansion, Gatwick Airport has received approval for a significant infrastructure project: the development of a second runway. This £2.2 billion privately financed initiative, greenlit by Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, is poised to further enhance Gatwick’s capacity and operational capabilities.

The project involves relocating the airport’s existing emergency runway approximately 13 yards to the north. This repositioning will allow the runway to be utilized for departures by narrow-bodied aircraft, including popular models like the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. The addition of this runway capacity is expected to unlock opportunities for new destinations and increase flight frequencies, ultimately benefiting travellers with a wider array of choices and potentially more competitive fares. This strategic investment in infrastructure demonstrates Gatwick’s commitment to future growth and its ambition to remain a leading global gateway.
