Gilt yields surge, sending Labour a stark warning: Alex Brummer

Rising Bond Yields and Economic Challenges

The yield on British government bonds has surged to the highest level since the Great Financial Crisis of 2008, a period marked by a global banking system in turmoil. The return on the ten-year gilt has exceeded 5 per cent, surpassing previous peaks seen after the government’s pandemic spending spree, the substantial energy bail-out following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and the controversial Liz Truss mini-Budget.

What is particularly concerning is the apparent complacency from the government as tensions in the Gulf region expose vulnerabilities in the nation’s defense systems and economic strategy. Recent borrowing data for February highlights Labour’s challenges, with the deficit reaching £14.3 billion, exceeding City forecasts despite strong tax revenues. The unexpected factor behind this increase is not due to increased spending on public services or national security but rather interest payments on the national debt.

An extraordinary £2 billion payment was delayed from the previous month. More troubling is the rise in payouts on index-linked bonds, which make up a quarter of the UK’s debt stock, increasing in line with retail prices. This situation arises at a time when the country is experiencing a sudden resurgence of higher prices due to an oil and gas shock from the Middle East, undermining hopes for lower interest rates.

So far, the government has shown no indication of acknowledging the severity of the situation. Chief Secretary to the Treasury James Murray claimed that the UK is “better prepared” for a volatile world than other G7 nations, a statement that seems to be at odds with market reactions, as bond traders are moving away from gilts.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves should be closely monitoring these developments. However, the only visible response has been Reeves criticizing petrol suppliers for price gouging.

The irony is that the primary cause of the rising British debt was not the Truss mini-Budget, which was later reversed by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, but rather £40 billion in unfunded energy subsidies introduced shortly after the Ukraine invasion.

Strategic Moves in the Consumer Goods Sector

Unilever, a leading figure in the fast-moving consumer goods sector, has recently informed investors that brands like Hellmann’s and Knorr are among its power brands and are not for sale. This stance is now changing as the company considers a potential bid for all its food brands by a smaller US spices specialist, McCormick.

Given that McCormick is valued at around $14.9 billion (£11.1 billion) and Unilever’s food brands are estimated to be worth up to £27 billion, executing such a deal would require significant financial maneuvering. One possible approach could involve a two-stage transaction where Unilever spins off its food division and McCormick acquires a major stake in the new entity, with Unilever gradually reducing its holding over time.

If a clean disposal can be arranged, Unilever’s ambitious CEO, Fernando Fernandez, may focus more on fast-growing beauty, personal care, and wellness brands, potentially through acquisitions. Possible targets might include companies such as Sensodyne toothpaste-to-Centrum vitamin concern Haleon or Johnson & Johnson spin-off Kenvue.

A New Era for Currency Design

The Bank of England is shifting its focus from featuring British heroes on banknotes to showcasing native animals. In contrast, the United States is taking a different approach. Former President Donald Trump has convinced a federal arts panel to create a 24-carat gold coin commemorating the 250th anniversary of the US breaking away from Britain. Figures such as Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Reagan are likely to be surprised by this development.
