Guy Sebastian Opens Up About Gruelling Spinal Surgeries and Finding New Perspective on ‘The Piano’
Last year proved to be a challenging period for Australian music icon Guy Sebastian. The beloved artist, known for his chart-topping hits and his tenure as a coach on The Voice, underwent two significant spinal surgeries within a single week. These procedures were necessary to alleviate severe nerve pain that had been plaguing him. Shortly after his recovery, Guy found himself stepping into a new role as a mentor on the emotional new television series, The Piano.
Speaking with TV WEEK, the 44-year-old admitted that he wasn’t “really” feeling his best during the initial stages of filming The Piano. The physical discomfort from his recent surgeries was a constant companion.
“I couldn’t turn my head, and I had to sit in a particular way,” Guy recalled. “I was just trying my hardest not to be difficult on set, but it was incredibly uncomfortable having to remain seated for such extended periods. I remember thinking to myself, ‘Just push through, just push through, don’t be a drama queen.’”

However, as Guy sat alongside acclaimed concert pianist Andrea Lam, listening to ordinary Australians share their deeply personal stories and their profound passion for music with host Amanda Keller, his own perspective began to shift. One particular story that resonated deeply with him was that of a young woman whose life was irrevocably altered at the age of 17 when she was struck by a truck. She awoke from a coma at 18, facing a vastly different future.
“This accident, a blink-of-an-eye moment, changed the rest of her life and her family’s life,” Guy explained. “And here I am, sitting in that chair thinking, ‘Oh, I’m just a bit uncomfortable.’ Suddenly, it shakes you out of your own head and your own internal narrative.”

Another profoundly moving experience for Guy on The Piano involved an unexpected reunion with someone from his childhood.
“The producers didn’t know, no one knew… It’s someone I sang with when I was a kid growing up, and then, right up until I was about 21, I hung out with this beautiful person who was just the sweetest soul in my life. And then they just rocked up, and I immediately burst into tears.”
Guy shared that during the filming of The Piano, he found himself frequently moved to tears, only to be overcome with laughter shortly thereafter.
“And the fact that there’s no competition is what I love about it the most,” he added.
This isn’t to say that Guy, who spent six years as a beloved coach on The Voice, has any issues with competitive singing shows.
“I think they both have their place, and I thoroughly enjoyed The Voice,” he clarified. “The difference with The Piano is that they don’t make fun of people, and they don’t treat people as mere commodities. They’re so incredibly caring.”
It’s been nearly 23 years since Guy first captured the nation’s attention on a competitive singing program – the inaugural season of Australian Idol. Since that breakthrough, he has released an impressive 11 albums, all of which have reached the top 10 on the charts. His extensive fan base even includes the legendary Celine Dion, who recently took to TikTok to declare, “I love sooo much Guy Sebastian!”
Guy described the experience of waking up to discover Celine Dion’s public endorsement as “phenomenal.”
“I fell asleep in this dusty, dirt-covered outfit that I’d been wearing the day before because I was in the process of moving house down south,” he reminisced. “I was on my own, I grabbed some takeaway from the servo down the road, went to bed, and then woke up to my phone buzzing with the news that Celine likes me!”
Now that Guy is feeling “good as gold” physically, he is eagerly preparing for his upcoming national tour, aptly named “100 Times Around the Sun.”
“I’m back in the gym, I’m feeling fit, and I’m definitely, definitely prepared,” he stated with enthusiasm.

Guy, who is a father to two sons, Hudson and Archie, with his wife Jules, revealed that 11-year-old Archie is an exceptionally talented singer.
“He’s getting mind-blowingly good,” Guy beamed. “Technically, the things he’s doing are things you simply can’t teach.”
Guy has extended an invitation to Archie to join him on stage for a performance during the tour.
“He said he’s pretty keen,” Guy shared. “The good thing is he’s currently involved in a school musical, and he’ll be on stage for that in about a month. I think he’ll get a real hunger for performing after that, and it will give him a little more confidence. He’ll be incredibly nervous, but I reckon he’ll do it. He might pull out on the night, but we’ll certainly try to encourage him.”
