Waddingham on Sudeikis’s Creative Process: A “Love-Hate” Dynamic on Set
Hannah Waddingham, the acclaimed actress known for her role as Rebecca Welton in the beloved Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, has opened up about the unique working relationship she shares with her co-star and the show’s creator, Jason Sudeikis. While expressing deep affection for her colleagues and the show itself, Waddingham admitted that Sudeikis’s creative process, which often involves last-minute script changes, can sometimes test her patience.
In a candid interview, the 51-year-old star described her dynamic with Sudeikis, who plays the titular character Ted Lasso, as an “ongoing love-hate relationship.” She explained that Sudeikis, who is also a writer and executive producer on the show, has a distinctive method of crafting scenes. “There’s always going to be a bit of give and take within a scene, because of the nature of how Sudeikis works,” Waddingham told Variety. “He hears it in the room, and then we tweak. With that boy, you’ve got to roll with the punches.” This collaborative, improvisational approach, while leading to brilliant on-screen moments, means that actors must remain flexible and adaptable.
Waddingham plays Rebecca Welton, the formidable owner of AFC Richmond Football Club, while Sudeikis embodies Ted Lasso, the optimistic American football coach tasked with managing the English soccer team. Despite the occasional creative friction, Waddingham cherishes the unconventional bond between their characters. “I love that we buck against the norm,” she stated. “They are undoubtedly soulmates, but that can mean a myriad of things.” This nuanced definition of soulmates allows their relationship to evolve beyond traditional romantic tropes, focusing instead on mutual respect, challenge, and support within the demanding world of professional football.
Navigating the Time Jump and the “Exhumation” of a Character
The prospect of Ted Lasso continuing into a fourth season, following a significant three-year time jump, has sparked discussion among fans and cast members alike. Waddingham herself previously contemplated the show’s potential end after the third season, a period she described with a rather vivid analogy.

She admitted to having “mourned” her character’s potential departure, likening the feeling to losing a cherished pet. “I don’t mind saying that I got a bit — not told off — but a lot of people were just like, ‘Why are you saying it’s like you’ve exhumed a beloved dead dog?'” she recalled. Waddingham defended her colourful description, emphasizing the depth of her connection to Rebecca Welton. “And I was like, ‘Guys, at least I’m saying beloved.’ When you’ve loved playing [someone] so much and they are very much a part of you… I’ve said so many times that the other cast members, you see them a lot, so that’s not the bit which you mourn. You mourn the loss of that character. Not knowing that, like I said, exhumed! Deliciously exhumed!” This sentiment highlights the profound emotional investment actors can have in the characters they portray, and the difficulty of saying goodbye to them.
The Evolving Dynamic Between Ted and Rebecca
The future of Ted and Rebecca’s relationship remains a key point of intrigue for viewers. While their connection has been a central pillar of the series, Waddingham is open to exploring its complexities further, regardless of its exact form.

“The beauty of Ted and Rebecca’s relationship is that they do call each other out on things,” Waddingham reflected. This willingness to challenge one another, rather than simply placating each other, is what she believes makes their bond so resilient and ultimately, “healthy and just leans into why they are absolutely right to be together in this workplace.” Their dynamic is a testament to a partnership built on honesty and mutual growth, even amidst the pressures of their professional lives.
Rebecca Welton: A Fierce Leader and Figurehead
Beyond her personal relationships, Rebecca Welton has undergone a significant transformation throughout the series, emerging as a powerful and independent figure. Waddingham views her character as the undisputed leader of AFC Richmond.

“She’s very much the figurehead of the whole organization,” Waddingham observed. “She’s unequivocally the leader. She’s become a real kind of lioness about both of her teams and that’s what’s been so lovely to play.” This portrayal of Rebecca as a strong, decisive, and protective leader resonates deeply with Waddingham, who finds immense satisfaction in embodying such a powerful female character. Her journey from a wronged woman seeking revenge to a confident and capable executive has been one of the most compelling arcs in the show. The show’s exploration of these character developments, coupled with its signature humour and heart, continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
