Community Mourns Loss of “Quiet Hero” Security Guard Stabbed While Defending Teen
A wave of grief and outrage has swept through the Mernda community following the tragic death of 22-year-old security guard Aidan Becker. Mr. Becker was allegedly stabbed to death on Friday evening while attempting to intervene in a robbery targeting a 14-year-old boy. The incident, which occurred around 5:50 pm on Bridge Inn Road, has sparked calls for greater action to combat escalating youth crime and violence.
A colleague of Mr. Becker’s from the Alfred Hospital, Hubert Sola, shared a poignant update, revealing the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding his friend’s death. Mr. Sola told reporters that Mr. Becker had been wearing a stab-proof vest as part of his duties earlier that day. However, after finishing his shift, he had removed the protective gear before encountering the alleged attackers.
“He actually took off his vest after a shift and then came to be stabbed without wearing the vest,” Mr. Sola recounted, his voice heavy with emotion. He emphasised the urgent need for more than just discussion, stating, “There needs to be less talking and more action. Every single community is getting affected by this, something needs to be done.”

Legal Proceedings Underway for Accused
In the wake of the incident, police have made several arrests. A 17-year-old male, who cannot be identified due to his age, appeared in the Children’s Court on Monday afternoon. He faces charges of murder and armed robbery. The teenager was apprehended on Friday evening, shortly after the alleged machete attack near Mernda Railway Station. He had been receiving medical attention for an injured hand while under police guard at a hospital over the weekend.
During a brief court hearing conducted via video link from a police station, the accused appeared visibly distressed, slumped in a chair and wearing bandages on his left hand. His father was present on the video link, observing the proceedings. The court heard that the teenager would be remanded to a youth detention centre and is scheduled to return to court in June, alongside other co-accused. The boy’s legal representative, Andrew McGregor, informed the court about hospital recommendations regarding pain medication for his client.
Multiple Charges Laid in Connection with the Incident
Authorities have confirmed that a total of four teenage males, aged between 16 and 18, have now been charged with murder and armed robbery in relation to Mr. Becker’s death. Another individual, 18-year-old Mike Pikos, also appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday and has been remanded to reappear in June.

A “Quiet Hero” Remembered
The Alfred Hospital, where Mr. Becker was employed, issued a heartfelt statement remembering him as a “quiet hero.” The hospital expressed its profound sadness at the passing of the young security officer.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of young security officer, Aidan Becker,” the statement read. “He will be remembered for being full of life, and for his positive energy, kindness and dedication. He was a quiet hero who gave his all for those around him.”
Government Response and Community Safety Initiatives
In response to the alarming incident, the Victorian government announced on Sunday that its Violence Reduction Unit would be deployed to Mernda. This unit will work in conjunction with Victoria Police and the Department of Education to address community concerns and prevent future violence.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan expressed her condolences to Mr. Becker’s family, stating, “My thoughts are with the family of the man who was brutally stabbed in Mernda – our hearts break for them.” She highlighted the purpose of the Violence Reduction Unit, explaining, “We created the Violence Reduction Unit for this reason, to work with the community in the aftermath of violence and prevent further trauma.” The Premier also commended Victoria Police for their swift action in apprehending the accused and their ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of the Mernda community.
The tragic events in Mernda have underscored the growing concerns about youth crime and the safety of individuals who bravely step in to help others. The community now faces the difficult task of healing and working together to prevent such devastating incidents from occurring again.
