India Poised to Ratify Landmark EU Trade Deal, Ambassador Confirms
India is prepared to swiftly finalize and implement a significant trade agreement with the European Union, described as the “mother of all trade deals.” Saurabh Kumar, India’s Ambassador to the EU, expressed this readiness in a recent interview, emphasizing that the pact’s ratification hinges on the EU completing its internal procedural steps.
“As soon as the EU is able to complete its internal processes, we will be in a position to sign the deal,” Ambassador Kumar stated. He conveyed strong confidence that the agreement would be ratified “very quickly,” with both parties committed to expediting the process.
This comprehensive free-trade agreement, inked in January, holds the potential to substantially boost trade between the two economic blocs. It aims to double EU exports to India by the year 2032. This ambitious target is underpinned by the reduction of tariffs on approximately 96% of goods exported from the EU to India, a move projected to save European companies around €4 billion annually in duties. For India, the deal offers a welcome measure of economic diversification and resilience, particularly following periods of trade friction and targeted sanctions from other major economies.
The full realization of this agreement promises to create a unified market encompassing two billion people, representing a substantial economic force on the global stage.
Strategic Importance in a Shifting Global Landscape
The timing of this trade deal is particularly noteworthy, occurring as both the EU and India seek to mitigate economic vulnerabilities. This includes reducing over-reliance on specific trade policies and navigating the growing trade surpluses of major global players. Furthermore, the agreement acknowledges the strategic importance of securing access to critical mineral reserves.
Ambassador Kumar lauded the pact as a “strategic” victory in the context of an increasingly “multipolar world.” He articulated that both the EU and India are significant “poles” within this evolving global configuration. He underscored the crucial nature of EU-India cooperation, not only for their “mutual benefit” but also for contributing to “global stability.”
When questioned about the influence of aggressive trade policies from prominent nations acting as a catalyst for the deal, Ambassador Kumar maintained that the India-EU relationship possesses intrinsic strength and “stands on its own feet.” However, he conceded the practical necessity of diversifying supply chains and reducing dependencies in an environment marked by heightened trade volatility.
“Over-dependencies are not good,” he explained. “There is a need to have redundancies built into supply chains to have multiple options.” He further elaborated that the India-EU FTA is instrumental in the process of “de-risking our respective economies, building in redundancies, having more manufacturing options.” He concluded that the deal is poised to “serve a very useful purpose” in this regard.
A New Era of EU-India Cooperation
Ambassador Kumar’s remarks were made during a period of significant diplomatic engagement, with India hosting prominent world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, for the India-AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.
He highlighted technology and defence as key pillars for the burgeoning EU-India relationship, signaling the commencement of a “new phase” of collaboration. This strategic alignment is further reinforced by the recent signing of a security and defence partnership on the sidelines of the EU-India Summit.
“As we go further, defence and particularly defence industries, and technological aspects will become more important in the EU-India relationship,” Ambassador Kumar projected. This indicates a deepening commitment to joint initiatives in critical sectors that will shape future economic and security landscapes for both regions.
