Injury Setback for Jake Trbojevic
Manly forward Jake Trbojevic is facing another injury challenge after fracturing his cheekbone during Friday night’s victory over the St George Illawarra Dragons. Despite the setback, Trbojevic remains optimistic about returning to play this week against the Cowboys.
The injury occurred during a tackle, which caused significant swelling and temporarily impaired Trbojevic’s vision. However, the Manly Sea Eagles co-captain quickly reassured fans that he was not concussed, which was his primary concern.
“I didn’t feel any pain, and I wasn’t concussed, which was the main thing. But it closed up so quickly that I couldn’t see,” Trbojevic said on Sunday in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald. “I did it while making a tackle. It’s slowly opening today. I still look absolutely glamorous.”
Trbojevic added, “But I’ll be all good for Thursday. I’m honestly fine. If I could open my eyes, I would have kept playing the other night.”
Focus on Recovery and Future Plans
The absence of a head injury assessment (HIA) is a relief for Trbojevic, given his history of head injuries. While this latest issue is facial rather than neurological, it contributes to ongoing discussions about his long-term durability.
Off the field, Trbojevic also addressed rumors about his future, particularly reports of a round 10 deadline related to a 2027 contract option. He dismissed any immediate pressure to make a decision, reaffirming his commitment to the club and his desire to continue playing for the next 12 months.
“Foz was such a great competitor and leader as a player; he was such a passionate person, and all of those qualities have rubbed off on the playing group,” Trbojevic said. “Winning definitely helps everything. Hopefully, we can keep building on the last couple of games.”
He continued, “I love Manly, I want to play for Manly, and whoever the coach is moving forward won’t worry me too much. I just want to make sure I can keep offering my best self—I want to keep playing to the level that is acceptable. That’s what I’ll base my decision on. There’s no real deadline. There’s a certain respect from both sides.”
Looking Ahead to the Cowboys
Trbojevic emphasized that the focus now is on the upcoming clash with the North Queensland Cowboys, where he is determined to contribute despite his injury. The game is crucial for Manly, as they aim for their third win of the season and maintain new coach Kieran Foran’s perfect record at the helm.
“I don’t want to get ahead of myself. I know it’s only been a couple of wins, and it’s still early in the year. We just need to keep building. I’m only worried about Thursday. I only have one eye on the Cowboys,” he said.
